I always wanted to be a therapist, but it took a difficult time in my life, and therapy of my own, to get me there. I went back to school in my 40's to become a counselor, and have never regretted it. I have an MA Degree in Counseling, and am licensed in TN and LA. I also hold a certification to see clients via telehealth in SC.
I work with adults who are challenged by conditions such as borderline personality disorder, depression, or anxiety. I use several therapy modalities, but a main one is Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which teaches a large set of coping skills to manage problem emotions and behaviors. In addition to doing individual sessions, I lead an online weekly DBT skills training group to learn these skills.
I see counseling as a process in which you, the client, and I, the counselor, work together as a team to explore and define problems you are experiencing, develop goals to create your “life worth living”, and work systematically towards realizing those goals. I believe that the relationship between the counselor and the client is a real relationship between two equal human beings, and that building trust and safety in the counseling relationship is foundational to effective work together.
