“She is very patient and listens to everything you have to say. She is super helpful in every way. Her calm demeanor is also super helpful when dealing with patients like me. I asked for some homework to help with my anxiety. She went over and above to send me everything I needed to get a great start. I would highly recommend her for anyone struggling with anxiety or depression. I would give her more stars if I could! ”

Getting to know Michaela Munsee

I am a clinical therapist with specialized experience in both outpatient and residential treatment for substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. My passion lies in helping individuals and families navigate recovery through a compassionate, collaborative, and evidence-based approach. I draw from CBT, DBT, ACT, motivational interviewing, and trauma-informed practices to support clients in building healthier coping strategies, processing difficult experiences, and strengthening resilience. Over the years, I have worked with individuals facing high-acuity challenges, guiding them through individualized treatment planning, relapse prevention, and aftercare support. I have also developed and facilitated group programs focused on topics such as addiction neuroscience, trauma recovery, self-sabotage, and healthy relationships. My clients appreciate my ability to meet them where they are, balance accountability with encouragement, and create a safe, nonjudgmental space for growth. Whether you are beginning your recovery journey, managing a relapse, or working on your mental health alongside substance use concerns, I am committed to walking alongside you with empathy, structure, and genuine care.

What should a new client know about working with you?

New clients should know that therapy with me is a collaborative process—your voice and goals shape the direction of our work together. I believe in a person-centered approach, which means you are always an active participant in building your treatment plan. My role is to provide structure, clinical insight, and a supportive environment where you can explore challenges, develop coping strategies, and celebrate progress. Clients often tell me they feel heard, understood, and empowered in our sessions. I value honesty and openness, and I bring both warmth and directness into my style. I will challenge unhelpful patterns when needed, while also helping you recognize strengths and practice self-compassion. I emphasize relapse prevention, emotional regulation, and long-term stability, so that the skills you learn in therapy extend into everyday life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our work together begins with a comprehensive assessment to better understand your history, current challenges, and personal goals. From there, we co-create a treatment plan that outlines the areas you’d like to focus on, whether it’s managing cravings, processing trauma, improving relationships, or developing healthier coping strategies. A typical session often blends structured skill-building with open discussion. Depending on your needs, we may use CBT to identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns, DBT to strengthen emotional regulation and distress tolerance, or motivational interviewing to enhance readiness for change. For clients in recovery, we also focus on relapse prevention planning, aftercare resources, and strategies to support long-term wellness. In sessions, you can expect a balance of reflection, practical tools, and supportive accountability. My goal is to help you leave each session with insight and strategies you can immediately apply to your life. Over time, we’ll continue to review progress together and adjust your plan so that therapy remains relevant, empowering, and effective.
