Rene Amsterdam, LMSW

Psychotherapist
MI
I am a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) providing therapy to children, teens, and young adults across Michigan. As a Guyanese-American therapist, I am passionate about delivering culturally responsive, high-quality care that honors each client’s identity, background, and lived experience. My work focuses on supporting clients through women’s issues, cultural identity exploration, and the unique challenges faced by children and adolescents. I believe that each person is an active participant in their own healing, and I strive to create a space where clients feel empowered, respected, and supported throughout their journey. I approach therapy with warmth, compassion, and a strong commitment to meeting clients where they are. Whether working with young clients, teens, or adults, my goal is to foster growth, resilience, and a deeper understanding of self in a way that feels meaningful and accessible. I also speak Guyanese Creole, allowing me to connect more deeply with clients who share that cultural background.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me feels supportive, collaborative, and grounded in genuine care. I believe therapy should be a space where you feel comfortable being yourself, sharing openly, and moving at a pace that feels right for you. My style is warm and engaging, and I prioritize building trust and connection from the very beginning. I don’t see clients as “problems to fix,” but as individuals with strengths, insight, and the ability to grow. I’m here to walk alongside you—offering guidance, support, and encouragement as we work through challenges together. I have a strong passion for working with children, teens, and women, and I bring a culturally sensitive lens to my work, especially when it comes to identity and lived experiences. Whether you’re navigating emotional challenges, life transitions, or simply need a space to process, you can expect to feel heard, supported, and valued.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our work together begins with an initial session where I take time to get to know you, your experiences, and what brings you to therapy. I create space for you to share openly while also asking thoughtful questions to better understand your needs and goals. From there, sessions are tailored to you. With children and teens, I may incorporate age-appropriate, engaging approaches to help them express themselves and build skills in a way that feels natural and supportive. I also collaborate with caregivers when appropriate to ensure consistency and support outside of sessions. For adults, sessions often focus on exploring emotions, building coping skills, and gaining insight into patterns related to relationships, identity, and life challenges. Throughout the process, I remain flexible and collaborative, ensuring therapy feels relevant and supportive. My goal is to create a consistent, safe environment where you feel supported as you grow, heal, and move forward with greater confidence and clarity.
