Hi there, I'm Theresa!
I am a Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Worker in the state of Kansas. I have been practicing social work for 16 years. I have worked in a variety of settings to include inpatient/outpatient mental health, domestic violence, and private practice. I work with a variety of ages and various populations. Much of my experience has been working with people who are struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, LGBTQ+ issues, and the challenges of parenting.
My approach
I work with a Strength-based theory using elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I work to build a strong, trusting relationship with each client and help them understand the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and actions.
My focus
My focus when working with clients is to establish goals for treatment, build rapport, and establish a relationship of trust. I understand that deciding to seek therapy is a vulnerable time, and I am honored to be on this journey with you.
My communication style
I prioritize clear, open communication to create a supportive, non-judgmental environment. I practice active listening and will give you opportunities to reflect on your experiences with you as an empathetic partner. If we’re working through something challenging, you can expect me to be calm and patient.
My journey to mental healthcare
I grew up in inner city St. Louis. My mom was a single mother who financially struggled to provide for her two children. Life was challenging. I went into the Air Force at 18 years old and shortly thereafter got married and had two children. I took college courses here and there, but was not sure what direction I wanted to pursue. I had a college professor who gave me a great piece of advice: to volunteer in areas I was interested in. That led me to a passion for social work. I left the military after 6 years and pursued college.
