“ I felt immediately at ease upon meeting Alex. His gentle demeanor, calming presence, and nonjudgmental attitude created a safe space from the very beginning. I’ve worked with many therapists before, but there’s something uniquely grounding about Alex. For the first time, I confronted parts of myself I had long avoided. Thanks to our work together, I live a more fulfilling life. He’s given me tools to manage overwhelming emotions even outside of our sessions. As someone who has struggled with anxiety and uncertainty, I’ve learned how to face life’s curveballs and roll with the punches. I highly recommend Alex to anyone seeking meaningful, compassionate support.”

Getting to know Thomas Alexander Smith

Hi, I am Alex. Whether your concerns stem from the daily stress of work and relationships, long-standing family dynamics, or questions around identity and self-concept, we will work together to bring about clarity, connection, and resolve. You will feel seen, heard, and supported as you grow into a more grounded and comfortable you. We will foster a foundation of trust and collaboration, and explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences, examining how each has shaped and impacted you. You will get to know yourself on a much deeper level while working towards your own individual therapeutic goals. I hold a Master's degree in Counseling Psychology from the University of Denver and a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and Economics from Middlebury College. Both of these degrees inform my approach to supporting your growth and healing.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I have worked with many people, each with their own unique story. I help people with their anxiety, depression, trauma, and grief, as well as individuals with family and relationship conflicts. I specialize in working with the gay and queer community and those who are exploring their identity. I work from a trauma-informed, multicultural orientation as a baseline for all therapeutic processes. I will do my best to appreciate and uphold whichever aspects of yourself you bring into the therapeutic space. Additionally, I operate from a humanistic, psychodynamic, and existential lens, pulling in techniques from other modalities, like mindfulness and ACT, as needed. At the core, I believe that you are the expert of your own life, and I want you to feel empowered in the relationship that we will be building. I will ask thoughtful questions, pose new perspectives, provide empathy without judgment, and create a comfortable space for you to explore your experiences, help you build insight, and take the desired steps towards being a more authentic you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Therapy is not a linear process. Each person heals differently and moves at their own pace. My role is to adapt to your individual needs and goals, while offering support, insight, and practical tools along the way. I provide structure through weekly sessions at a consistent time, whether virtually or in-person. This helps create stability and momentum in our work together. Whether over the course of a few months or a few years, I am looking forward to getting to know you and helping you. Book a free consultation with me and let's get started!
