Hi there, I'm Toby!
My name is Toby Anderson, and I have been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for over 40 years. I earned my Master’s in Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University. I am a father and grandfather, and when we get together for Thanksgiving dinner, there are 22 of us. Being a father is very important to me, and I have learned many things from that role that have helped me in therapy. I exemplify paternal characteristics in counseling, and part of therapy is teaching clients those same attributes so they can apply them in their own lives. I also help clients identify their thoughts and recognize which ones contribute to their struggles.
My approach
I am a Christian counselor who also uses cognitive behavioral techniques. I always maintain a positive, non-judgmental regard for my clients and incorporate many other therapeutic modalities. I encourage clients to take responsibility for change and provide homework assignments to guide them through that process.
My focus
I work well with teenagers through adulthood. My specialties include relationship difficulties, depression, anxiety, post-trauma stress, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and sexual addiction.
My communication style
Clients will feel warmth, understanding, and trust from me. We will laugh together and address difficult situations in a relaxed atmosphere.
My journey to mental healthcare
From my teenage years through adulthood, I have been sought after for advice and told I have a natural ability for counseling. Several leaders have recognized my innate ability with people, which helped direct my educational goals toward the counseling field.
My goals for you
In addition to identifying struggles and teaching clients how to address them, I use homework assignments, psychodrama, visualization, eye movement desensitization reprogramming (EMDR), and systematic desensitization.
