Who is a psychologist?

A psychologist observes and interprets people's behaviors and responses. Based on their assessment and diagnosis, they suggest ways to correct, manage, or treat mental and behavioral health issues and disorders, such as depression and anxiety. Psychologists use talk therapy, psychological evaluations, and testing to help patients. These specialists help solve work-related complications, relationship problems, substance abuse, trauma, or any mental health issues hindering a person's everyday functioning.

Psychologists may work in elementary and secondary schools, corporate settings, healthcare services, prisons, correctional facilities, and other government departments. They may also practice privately or in counseling centers, community organizations, mental health clinics, nursing homes, etc. Psychologists also work closely with other physicians and specialists to treat patients if needed.

What kind of education and training do psychologists receive?

A psychologist's education and training depend on their area of specialty. However, all psychologists must complete their graduation and earn a master's degree in psychology. They must cover statistics, ethics, and the biological, cognitive-affective, and social bases of behavior. Some psychology specializations also require a Ph.D. Further, some schools allow students to specialize in their bachelor's in psychology, while others enable psychology electives to study niche fields of interest.

Different states may have separate licensure requirements. Hence, psychologists usually acquire a psychology degree in the state where they plan to practice, which generally fulfills all in-state licensure requirements.

Generally, the state's board of psychology issues licenses after applicants meet the educational and work experience requirements. Some states may require psychologists to gain a certain amount of experience before, during, or after applying for the license.

Some specializations in psychology require certifications and continuing education credits. Psychologists may pursue certification even if it is not compulsory, as it enhances their qualifications and job potential.

In the US, many states do not allow psychologists to prescribe medication. However, they can prescribe drugs from a given list in New Mexico, Louisiana, Illinois, Iowa, and Idaho. To do this, psychologists practicing in these states need additional training. These medications are used to treat emotional and mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety.

Why should one see a psychologist?

Before booking an appointment with a psychologist near you, it can be essential to know what issues they can help you with. Psychologists can help people cope with overwhelming feelings regarding relationships, work, study, and more. For example, they can help people who are depressed, anxious, lacking self-confidence, or facing adjustment issues due to sudden life changes. For instance, children could have difficulty focusing on school work when coping with their parent's divorce or another life-altering event. The trauma of losing a loved one, sleep difficulties, and eating disorders are also among common reasons to consider seeing a psychologist.

Additionally, one must visit a psychologist if faced with the following challenges or disorders:

  • anger issues
  • schizophrenia
  • bipolar disorder
  • gaming addiction
  • substance abuse
  • gambling addiction
  • alcohol use disorder
  • postpartum depression
  • body dysmorphic disorder
  • challenges in stress management
  • coming to terms with a severe illness
  • phobias (such as social or acrophobia)
  • eating disorders (anorexia or bulimia nervosa)

Moreover, if you still decide to see a psychologist, you can always check your primary care provider or family physician. They will be able to tell you if you need to visit one.

What kind of therapy do psychologists use?

Psychologists use a combination of different kinds of therapy to treat patients. These include psychodynamic, interpersonal, cognitive behavioral, humanistic, or dialectical behavior therapy. A combination of talk therapy and medicines is common, for which they will work closely with a psychiatrist or primary care provider.

Psychologists use tests that help evaluate personality characteristics, intellectual skills, vocational preferences, or cognitive strengths and weaknesses.

Understanding talk therapy and how it works

Talk therapy, also called psychotherapy, involves a person attending sessions with their therapist to discuss their experiences. These sessions could be with a licensed psychologist, counselor, social worker, psychiatric nurse, or psychiatrist.

In talk therapy, the provider talks with a person about past traumas and psychiatric conditions to diagnose, evaluate, and treat various mental health concerns. They assist individuals in verbally processing and resolving issues. They may also help individuals navigate disorders that have disrupted their daily lives.

In a talk therapy session, the provider may help a person do the following:

  • Gain a better understanding of their emotions
  • Identify roadblocks and obstacles to optimal mental health
  • Overcome anxiety and insecurities
  • Cope with stress
  • Process previous traumatic experiences
  • Work on breaking unhealthy habits
  • Discuss possible lifestyle changes
  • Pinpoint triggers

Talk therapy allows people to discuss their concerns, goals, and challenges with someone who remains unbiased and nonjudgmental. After multiple sessions, talk therapy should help individuals recognize and eventually modify thought and behavior patterns that may prevent a healthy state of mind. These sessions will always remain strictly confidential.

Talk therapy should be an open-ended discussion about any issues or concerns a person faces. A psychotherapist may take notes while an individual shares details about their family life, relationships, childhood experiences, symptoms, or medical history, among other topics. The provider may help guide conversations to assist a person in making connections between experiences, thoughts, and behaviors. However, they will never force them to talk about anything they are not ready to discuss.

There is no limit on the number of talk therapy sessions a person may attend to gain deeper insight into their condition, habits, or challenges. A provider may recommend ongoing sessions until they develop an action plan for treatment or see significant lifestyle improvements in their clients.

What are the different types of psychologists?

When you search for psychologists near you, you will come across many psychologists with specific specialties. Before booking an appointment, knowing what each of these specialties means and how they can help you can be helpful. Some of the different kinds of psychologists are:

  • Clinical psychology: This specialized field focuses on assessing, diagnosing, treating, and preventing mental disorders based on evidence-based approaches. These psychologists can work with patients of all ages, from children to older adults. They also help in treating groups like couples or families. They assess the patient's behavior through interviews and tests that they administer. They aim to improve the patient's mental well-being and overall quality of life.
  • Behavioral and cognitive psychology: These psychologists help patients explore the minute interplay of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. They empower their patients to navigate life challenges and transform negative behavior patterns into positive ones.
  • Clinical child and adolescent psychology: Psychologists specializing in this field deal with the issues children and adolescents face. They help cultivate healthy development and well-being during these critical stages.
  • Psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychology: These psychologists use the psychoanalytic approach to understand and address the unconscious thoughts, experiences, and emotions that shape their behavior. Psychologists specializing in this field examine and understand the dynamics between the conscious and unconscious elements of the psyche. They try to uncover the underlying reasons and conflicts that cause a disorder in the patient's overall mental health and well-being.

What should one expect during a visit to a psychologist?

If you visit a psychologist for the first time, you can expect them to start by asking about your challenges. They may also ask you about your lifestyle, the kind of work you do, and your daily routine. They will need you to define your symptoms and what situations make them worse or better.

The psychologist will also try to understand at what stage these challenges began and if they are linked to some event or trauma you might have faced. They will ask you questions to help them analyze the issue and understand how to help you solve or manage it.

Further, the psychologist may do a few tests to assess your concentration, mood, memory, personality characteristics, and other relevant parameters. Once they understand the problem, they will prepare a treatment plan for you. It could include using any of the therapies mentioned earlier or a combination.

Tips to improve your mental health

You can incorporate these practices in your life to improve your mental well-being.

  • Stay in the present

Our minds tend to wander into the past or the future more often, stirring various emotions and reactions in the body. Try to pay more attention to the present moment. Focus all your senses on what's happening in the 'now.' This is commonly called mindfulness.

Practicing mindfulness meditation can significantly improve your mood. It can help you understand yourself better and help you enjoy your surroundings. It can positively change how you see, feel, and approach your life's challenges.

  • Connect with people

Human relationships can improve mental well-being. They can help foster a sense of belongingness and self-worth. Strong relationships provide emotional support when required and allow you to share positive experiences.

Make it a point to spend quality time with your family daily. For instance, keep a fixed dinner time when the family eats together. Plan a day out with your friends. Switch off your devices and aim to talk or do an outdoor activity with your friends or family. Visit a family member or friend who requires support. Or volunteer for community work or at a local school or hospital.

  • Learn new skills

Learning new activities or skills increases nerve activity in your brain, which can help improve your mental health. It can also boost confidence and self-esteem, enable you to connect with others, and build a sense of purpose in life.

Try to learn to cook or learn to fix electronic devices. Work on DIY projects at home, like fixing broken stuff or doing something for the first time. Try a new hobby like writing or painting. Or, take up new responsibilities at work that helps improve your skills.

  • Stay physically active

Regular exercise or activity is a great way to stay healthy physically and mentally. It causes positive chemical changes in the brain that enhance your mood. It boosts self-esteem and helps set goals and achieve them.

Brisk walking is an excellent way to begin your fitness routine. Gradually move to running and aerobic exercises. The aim should be to stretch and move every muscle in the body. You can even do flexibility and strength training to enhance muscle strength and balance and reduce joint pain.
