Frequently asked questions

How much will an urgent care visit in Atlanta cost?

The cost of an urgent care visit will vary with the clinic you visit and the procedures or treatments that may be required. In Atlanta, the average cost of a single urgent care visit without insurance may be in the range of $100-$200.

How can I find an urgent care in Atlanta who takes my insurance?

Urgent care can become much more affordable if you use your insurance to pay. However, finding an urgent care center near you that accepts your particular insurance seems like a hassle. However, Zocdoc is here to help!
Use Zocdoc’s drop-down insurance menu to easily select your insurance carrier and plan. This will then give you a list of all the urgent care clinics in your vicinity that accept your insurance.

Are urgent care centers in Atlanta open after hours?

Yes! Almost all urgent care clinics are open after hours. These centers are also open on weekends and holidays. Use Zocdoc’s “More filters” to find urgent care providers that are open after 5 pm.

Do urgent care centers in Atlanta take appointments?

While many urgent care centers take walk-in patients, you can also book advance appointments with them. Booking appointments through Zocdoc is super simple: all you need to do is select the date and time you want, enter a few basic personal details and that’s it!

Do urgent care centers in Atlanta offer virtual visits or telemedicine?

Many urgent care centers and providers offer an option for virtual visits which means you don’t even need to leave your home to get the care you need. Finding the providers, practices and clinics that can offer you urgent care virtual visits is very simple with Zocdoc. Just look for the purple icon on the profile or you can filter by video visits.

When should you go to an urgent care center?

Urgent care centers can help you with a wide variety of conditions. These could be anything from small cuts to pink-eye to fractures. Visit an urgent care center near you if you need care for cold, flu, sore throat, sprains, strains, urinary tract infections (UTI), conjunctivitis, gastrointestinal upsets, ear infections, rashes, insect bites, cuts, burns or scrapes.

What time of day is urgent care least busy?

Usually urgent care is busiest in the morning, late evening and around dinner time since those are the most convenient times for the majority of the school-going and working population. Late morning and afternoon are the times when urgent care centers receive the least amount of patients.

What is the best time to go to an urgent care center in Atlanta?

The best time to visit an urgent care center may differ from person to person. To accomodate this and to give you a seamless visit, Zocdoc offers the option of booking appointments in advance. You can book these appointments for the same day, on a weekend or on any day convenient to you. You can also choose the time slot that would be most convenient for you, based on the availability.

What does urgent care mean?

Urgent care is a field of medicine that treats diseases, illnesses, and other disorders that require urgent medical attention. It includes diagnosing and treating flu, minor cuts and wounds, infections, sprains, and fractures.

Other reasons to go to an urgent care center may include bug stings, strep throat, burns, diarrhea, dehydration, urinary tract infections, vomiting, and common allergic reactions. Urgent care physicians can also prescribe medications and administer vaccines (such as the flu shot).

In other words, an urgent care center may be your best option if you need high-quality medical care and cannot wait for weeks. They are convenient and straightforward to use, and they may also offer walk-in appointments in some cases. Many other names for urgent care centers:

  • after-hours walk-in clinics
  • minute clinics
  • rapid care clinics
  • minor emergency centers
  • minor care clinics

Urgent care centers supplement the emergency department (ED) by providing round-the-clock and affordable care for conditions that do not pose an imminent risk to life or health. Scheduling an appointment beforehand is advisable as it can reduce wait time.

Emergency departments and urgent care centers

Emergency departments have highly specialized emergency physicians (and other health practitioners) to deal with crises. Patients who arrive at the ED with a significant illness or injury are assessed, treated, and stabilized. Therefore, ED may be the first step to recovery for such patients in medical emergencies.

Some emergency rooms are specialized and treat only particular injuries or patients. For instance, emergency departments at children's, women's, and several eye and ear hospitals. However, most EDs usually accept all types of crises, including:

  • Pediatric patients
  • Female patients experiencing obstetric emergencies
  • Strokes
  • Cardiac arrests, or
  • Paralysis attacks

Patients who cannot consult their primary care physician (PCP) or family doctor may also visit an urgent care center. Therefore, urgent care lies somewhere between a PCP and the emergency department — providing efficient and affordable care for many medical conditions.

The urgent care centers also provide a convenient alternative when you have a slight illness or injury but cannot wait until the next day (or week). Moreover, urgent care centers provide various diagnostic and preventative services, such as immunization, laboratory tests, and screening for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

One of the most critical distinctions between emergency departments and urgent care centers is the level of care provided. Emergency departments are equipped to handle critical and possibly fatal emergencies, while urgent care centers focus on managing urgent but non-life-threatening conditions.

Another distinction lies in cost and resource utilization. Emergency department visits are more expensive and resource-intensive than visits to urgent care near you. Therefore, individuals need to assess the severity of their condition and choose the appropriate healthcare facility accordingly, considering factors such as urgency, accessibility, and affordability.

Educational requirements of urgent care specialists

To work as urgent care physicians, students must first earn a bachelor's degree, preferably majoring in a science-related subject such as chemistry, physics, or biology. Students are required to take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) to gain admission to medical school. Medical students receive intensive instruction in anatomy, biochemistry, and pharmacology, among other subjects.

However, the final years are focused on clinical experience. Senior medical students obtain hands-on training and practical experience through clinical internships and practicum placements. Urgent care centers treat many conditions, so physicians possess diverse backgrounds and specializations.

Urgent care center staff includes general practitioners, internists, pediatricians, allergists, and other doctors. In addition, urgent care centers also employ registered nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. Regardless of these differences, however, every urgent care physician must be licensed to practice in the state(s) where they work. Some may also seek board certification in their primary specialty (or the field of their residency training). The requirements for licensure and board certification vary from state to state.

Services available at urgent care near you

In addition to treating minor injuries and providing medical care for illnesses like fever, flu, cough, and cold, urgent care centers offer a wide range of healthcare services. Here are some standard services you can expect to find at an urgent care center:

  • Diagnostic services: Urgent Care often has X-ray and lab facilities. They can do basic tests like blood, urine, and X-rays to help diagnose your condition quickly.
  • Prescription refills: If you don't have your regular medication, urgent care can often help with prescription refills to tide you over until you can see your primary care doctor.
  • Vaccinations: Many urgent care centers offer vaccinations for flu, tetanus, and other common diseases. They can also provide travel vaccinations if you are going abroad.
  • Physical examinations: Some urgent care facilities offer physical exams or medical fitness tests for school, sports, or work requirements. They can also provide general health check-ups.
  • Occupational health services: Urgent care can provide services like drug testing, physical exams, and treatment for work-related injuries for businesses.

It is important to remember that urgent care is not a substitute for emergency services. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room if you have a life-threatening emergency. However, for non-life-threatening medical needs that cannot wait for a regular doctor's appointment, urgent care near you can be a convenient and accessible option.

What to know before visiting an urgent care center?

Before heading to an urgent care center, it's crucial to understand how these facilities operate to ensure a smoother and more efficient visit. Here are a few things you need to know about urgent care centers before you go:

Choose the right urgent care center

Selecting a facility suited to your needs ensures better care and minimizes costs. If you have health insurance, verify that the urgent care center is in-network to avoid unexpected expenses.

Additionally, consider the center's specialty. Some facilities focus on pediatric care, women's health, or orthopedics. If the clinic communicates well with your primary care physician, this can streamline your treatment further.

Check-in online to save time

Many urgent care centers operate as walk-in clinics, allowing patients to see healthcare professionals without prior appointments. Depending on the number of people ahead, this can lead to variable wait times, ranging from 20 minutes to over an hour.

To minimize your wait, check if the clinic offers online check-in. Many centers allow you to complete initial paperwork online, which reserves your spot in line before arriving. While this is not a guaranteed appointment, it significantly reduces your time waiting in the lobby. Some urgent care centers also accept appointments, so it's worth calling ahead to confirm if this option is available.

Bring necessary documentation

Unlike regular doctors' offices, urgent care centers do not maintain detailed medical records for patients. To expedite your treatment, bring essential medical documents, including:

  • Health insurance information
  • Names of any prescription medications
  • A list of vaccination history and medical diagnoses
  • Contact details for your primary care physician

If you bring a minor who isn't your child, ensure you have their parental authorization form. Also, remember to carry a photo ID and be prepared to pay any copays or fees during your visit.

Pick the best time to visit

While urgent care centers are open during regular hours, some periods may be busier than others, such as nights, weekends, and holidays when primary care offices are typically closed.

If your condition allows flexibility, call ahead to ask about current wait times. Arriving during off-peak hours can significantly reduce your waiting period and get you treated faster.

Know when urgent care is not enough

While urgent care centers are ideal for treating non-life-threatening conditions, they cannot handle emergencies requiring specialized equipment or immediate intervention. In situations like the following, go directly to an emergency room:

  • Chest pain or shortness of breath
  • Severe headaches, dizziness, or vomiting
  • Difficulty breathing or severe allergic reactions
  • Stroke symptoms, including numbness, slurred speech, or loss of balance
  • Uncontrollable bleeding or compound fractures
  • Vaginal bleeding or abdominal pain during pregnancy

Seeking urgent care near you for such conditions can delay critical treatment and worsen outcomes. Emergency rooms are better equipped to address these scenarios promptly and effectively.

Urgent care — Atlanta and Georgia

As per IBIS World, as of 2023, around 6,081 urgent care centers are operating in the United States, which marks about 5.8% nationwide growth from 2022. Georgia's hospitals use the Georgia Coordinating Center to update their status of occupancy and capacity. As of Jan 10, 2023, the center's website details that Fulton County is home to four severely crowded, two overcrowded, and one busy emergency department. As per the report, only three out of the ten emergency departments in the county are at standard capacity. This fact briefly highlights the importance of urgent care centers in Atlanta.

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report shows that from 2021 to 2022, Georgia had a 'high' flu incidence rate. Data from the Georgia Department of Public Health indicate that between October 2022 and December 2022, there were around 1,825 hospitalizations due to flu. In the first week of January 2023, the metro areas of Georgia observed about 32 cases of influenza hospitalizations.

Data from America's Health Rankings indicates that as of 2022, about 40.6% of the state's adults had received the seasonal flu vaccine, much less than the national rate of nearly 45.6%. The vaccination rate in Georgia was highest amongst those aged 65 and above, around 63.2%. Only 27.5% of all Georgians between 18 and 44 received the flu shot in 2022. The rate for adults between 45 and 64 was around 42.4%. All three figures were also below the overall national average.
