Getting to know Dr. Abby Altman

Welcome to my practice. Below is some information about how I work: My style is practical and interactive, involving the setting of goals and the means to accomplish them in the shortest possible time. I offer individual and couples therapy, and medication if indicated. I treat individuals suffering from anxiety, depression, interpersonal, and ordinary life difficulties. My methods are grounded in evidence-based psychodynamic principles as well as CBT, DBT, mindfulness, and EMDR. I earned my medical degree from Universidad de Monterrey Facultad de Medicina and completed my residency in Psychiatry at New York Medical College. I hold certification from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. I serve on the Editorial Board of the peer-reviewed Journal of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry (AAPDP) and am a past Trustee, CME Chair, presenter, and Treasurer of the AAPDP. The first consultation is an opportunity for us to find out whether we think we can successfully work together. Please be sure to schedule a 90 minute visit (not 45 minutes) since that is the length of my consultations. Please note: my practice does not accept insurance; please schedule an appointment with me only if your insurance plan covers out-of-network physicians or you do not wish to use your insurance. In addition, please schedule with me only if you are a NYS resident. I look forward to meeting and working with you.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Although my training includes the prescribing of medication, I will almost always be inclined to work with you psychotherapeutically before prescribing medication. Medications can be useful but I will want to be certain we first address other possible contributors to the presenting symptoms. This is because medications can and do have side effects and there may be interactions among them. I will want to see a recent set of laboratory results (or, if overdue, send you for testing) as well to help to exclude the possibility of biological contributors.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I listen a lot but I also interrupt when I need more information, more clarity, or when I want to investigate something in greater depth. Some amount of listening without interrupting is also important so I can get a sense of your thought processes . If medication is indicated, it will occur in the context of talk therapy since medication alone is seldom, if ever, a sufficient treatment.

Dr. Altman helped me tremendously in just a few visits. She is a wonderful, empathetic doctor with excellent listening skills. She was able to offer me so much insight. I would highly recommend her to anyone.
I should have done this review much sooner. I've been meeting with Abby for almost a year now. She has been insightful and thoughtful in her care for my mental well-being. As someone who has seen many different people for my anxiety over the years, Abby is without a doubt, one of the most caring and competent people I have encountered in the Health Care field. Cannot recommend her more highly.
Dr. Abby was wonderful, and no wait time. She was genuine and caring. I need to feel comfortable in order to open up and she gave off that aura right away. She asked the right questions and she knew how to read my emotions right away. And this was just the first visit. I highly recommend Dr. Abby to anyone that needs someone to listen or is going through anything and wants help in working through things emotionally.
