“I have seen him twice weekly then once weekly for the next six years. I have found him consistently excellent, a true scholar of psychopharmacology and psychotherapy, willing to try a number of medications to find one that suited me given my various allergies and health problems, thoughtful, a good listener, who has always tried to find solutions, and has helped me immeasurably. He has always been available in emergencies day or night, and has very often sent scrips to the pharmacy when I have contacted him well outside office hours. All in all, I am extremely grateful, and should happily recommend him to future patients. An Indian patient. ”

Getting to know Dr. John Davidman

I am a Board-Certified Psychiatrist and Psychoanalyst, practicing since 2004. I provide comprehensive psychiatric treatment focused on individual needs and the collaborative development of treatment goals. I am knowledgeable about the latest developments in psychopharmacology and offer combination treatment with psychotherapy and medication management, as well as psychopharmacological management in conjunction with other psychotherapists. There are many effective psychotherapies, and it is important to find the right one for you. In Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, we seek to understand how assumptions derived from our past continue to influence our emotional life. Medication can often facilitate this process by reducing painful symptoms to the point where effective psychotherapy becomes possible. I often collaborate in providing medication management with therapists working in other modalities (CBT, DBT, Trauma-based, etc.), but I prefer not to provide medication management in the absence of therapy, as I see medication as part of treatment rather than the whole of treatment for most individuals. In addition to my private practice, I have taught Psychotherapeutic Treatment Planning and Technique within the NYU Psychiatry Residency and the Columbia Psychoanalytic Center. I currently teach a course on Freud at the Center for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis of New Jersey (CPPNJ). I earned my Doctor of Medicine from George Washington University and completed my Psychiatry Residency at New York University Elaine A. and Kenneth G. Langone Medical Center. I also trained in Psychoanalysis at Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
