About Dr. Breck Tiernan
While attending the University of Iowa, I sought a career in the medical field that was challenging yet set in a controlled, comfortable environment. My studies led me to Des Moines University College of Podiatric Medicine, where I earned my Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree. I was thrilled to discover a branch of medicine mostly beloved by its patients and not feared like many others. Being a foot and ankle specialist has allowed me to work in a comfortable office setting and surgical centers rather than on hospital floors.
I hope this brief introduction to my patient care philosophy and educational background provides you with enough information to make an important decision about your foot and ankle physician.

This proverb holds true in today’s medical system and says a lot about the perceived doctor-patient relationship. In my experience, patient comfort and education during an appointment are the most important aspects of any doctor visit. My goal is to make the appointment as relaxing and calming as possible while educating the patient about their condition and treatments. I encourage all questions and explore all treatment options, considering surgery only when conservative treatments have been exhausted.
Educational and training background is also important for patients to consider when making an informed decision. I graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry before attending Des Moines University College of Podiatric Medicine. My education culminated in the Chicago area, where I completed a rigorous multi-year Residency in Podiatric Surgery at Norwegian American Hospital. During residency, I performed over 800 foot and ankle procedures in 24 months. I am trained in all foot and ankle surgeries, including reconstructive surgery. I also took numerous classes on lower limb deformities and external fixation techniques nationwide.
