More about Dr. Brian Smith, PhD, JD

During this time of public health crisis, I am offering telehealth sessions, phone and video. I will follow up by phone with new appointments to make arrangements. Therapy can help people to relieve suffering, to understand themselves and their loved ones more deeply, and to expand their capacities for satisfaction in love and work. Often it takes the perspective of another person, and the support of that person, to put these processes into motion. Therapy can provide the safe space to explore ways to solve problems, grow, and live more fully. I am a general practitioner, with specialization in anxiety, depression, relationship troubles, life changes, and addictions. I offer individual therapy for adults and adolescents, and couples / family therapy. My approach is suited to the particular problems that bring you to therapy. Different problems, and different people, need different approaches. I work to be as personalized as possible. Since suffering can be hard to talk about, taking a first step toward therapy can be difficult. The special setting of psychotherapy is meant to give confidence, putting in motion processes of personal growth that typically involve relief, deeper understanding, and an expanded capacity for meaningful change. I have many years of experience in various roles of mental health work. I have presented, taught, and supervised trainees in a number of settings, including at Mt. Sinai-St. Luke's and Mt. Sinai-Roosevelt Hospitals, where I am on the voluntary faculty. Please note that I am in-network with Mt Sinai Top Tier, and with American Behavioral. I am out-of-network, not in-network, with all other insurance policies that carry those benefits.
