“My daughter had been struggling in school for years. The teaching staff and administration would not listen to me. She was in an ICT classroom up until the fourth grade not knowing how to read or do mathematics. Dr. Breitman read all of my daughter’s evaluations and we scheduled immediate testing. Following numerous sessions, Dr. Breitman properly diagnosed my daughter’s issues and wrote out an educational plan for her including suggested therapies and interventions. My daughter is typically very apprehensive while working with adults. The adults at her school have never been able to teach her to read or do math. When she worked with Dr. Breitman she bonded with her immediately. Dr. Breitman‘s warm, loving, caring personality shines through. She was able to reach my daughter by discovering her interests. My daughter is now receiving the proper help she needs because of Dr. Breitman’s wonderful analytical skills. My family and I are forever grateful.”

Getting to know Dr. Cindy Breitman

Dr. Cindy Breitman is a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist with over 25 years of experience. Her in-depth specialized training in how neurological brain processes interact with function allows her to best help you. Example patient populations include Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, stroke, TBI, memory decline, MS, concussion, rare neurological disorders, and congenital conditions. If you are concerned that you may have a potential developing neurological condition or are already diagnosed and want to understand its impact on your brain functioning, she can help. Unlike many other neuropsychologists, Dr. Breitman does not use technicians but rather provides direct, personal hands-on assessment to develop a dynamic understanding of cognition. Her goal is to see you as a whole person, developing a comprehensive understanding of your condition in the context of clinical history and presentation. After an initial consult involving a comprehensive review of presentation, it will be determined if referrals to other providers are more appropriate or if a detailed in person examination of cognition/mental functioning over several hours is recommended. This is followed by record review and a detailed report. Because she works with you as a team, the report is finalized only after results are discussed. She believes the most important part is not only your understanding of findings but also what happens next. There is a strong focus on recommendations and resources to help you function at your best. Dr. Breitman earned her PhD in Neuropsychology from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. She completed her internship in Neuropsychology at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System and her postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Miami Hospital. Dr. Breitman is past president of the New York State Association of Neuropsychology (2021–2023) and is highly involved as a clinician and patient advocate. She has a warm, heartfelt approach.

What should a new client know about working with you?

It is important to know that not every professional who refers to themselves as a neuropsychologist has the nationally agreed upon standard training in this specialized field. You can be assured that as a board certified neuropsychologist, rigorous training has occurred in understanding the neurological and psychological aspects of brain functioning. She provides direct services throughout the entire process so that you will always be working directly with your doctor and not with a technician when assessments are administered. Dr. Breitman knows that it is vital to understand all aspects of your life so that she can appropriately determine potential reasons for struggles and concerns. Warmth, comfort level, and connecting with you are key aspects of this entire process.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Following an in depth interview via zoom, an in person appointment is scheduled for a separate day to evaluate cognition and mental status. A typical assessment starts in the morning and ends in the middle of the afternoon, with intermittent breaks and lunch factored in. The evaluation will be geared towards the particular reason for presentation but may vary if during assessment performance suggests a need to look at additional factors. This allows for exploration of other reasons for difficulties that may not have been considered prior to presentation. Evaluation involves pencil/paper tasks, questions, puzzles, and more to assess areas such as memory, language, attention, executive functioning, processing speed, comprehension, perceptual skills, emotions, behavior, foundational skills, and intellect. After you leave the office, scoring, analyzing test results, record review, and write up occur which can take several weeks in order to formulate a comprehensive report. Additional questionnaires may be sent out to you and/or family members. A zoom feedback is coordinated once a report is written to go over results. Once thorough discussion has occurred, the report is finalized and sent out to relevant parties for whom you have signed a consent to receive the report.

More information on payments and coverage

Self-pay is expected on the day of the initial neuropsychological consult. You will have an opportunity to complete a detailed interview form prior to that meeting so that pertinent information will be provided ahead of time, allowing for in-depth discussion about your concerns during the consult. Should a comprehensive neuropsychological assessment be deemed appropriate, the initial fee can be applied towards the cost of the full evaluation (+11 hours). Our office is willing to check insurance benefits to determine if out of network coverage is available before scheduling an evaluation. We will submit claims on your behalf and/or provide a superbill. Our incredible practice manager Jan will help you each step of the way, including determining if there is a situation that may allow us to accept partial payment upfront and wait for insurance reimbursement before having you pay the balance. Depending on your out of network benefits, we have sometimes found that insurance may cover the majority of the service.

I am very thankful for Dr.Breitman and her neuropsychological assessment she performed with me. Her secretary was friendly and worked with me for the financial process. Dr. Breitman was patient, kind and thorough. I could tell she spent a lot of time writing the report and analyzing the results. We went over the report together and when there were questions about the results and potentially more cognitive issues then shown, I went back to do extra testing that revealed more information. Having evidence of the difficulties I was having was reassuring and validating. She was very good and I highly recommend her to any patient looking for an assessment.
