Dr Kimmel is an extraordinary therapist. I had weekly sessions with him for over a year. Right from the first session it felt very good with him. He is one of those doctors who take their job very seriously. He was patient, professional, and always sensitive. He provided an atmosphere of security and stability for me. A person I could fully trust. What I especially liked was his ability to help me structure my thoughts and look at things from different perspectives. I felt motivated and positiv after his sessions. Our talks had a continuous flow. He was always interested in me, asking questions until he really understood what I had on my mind. He showed me that my feelings and experiences were important and took his time with me. Never rushing into spontaneous conclusions. I could really open myself because he never judged me. He managed to put me in the center of the talk. Letting myself discover things and giving me time to reconsider. I could give every „stupid“ thought a chance to come out. This way I could really build trust in him. When I came to his sessions with a confused mind or struggles from everyday situations, I usually left with a fresh and clear mind. He helped me to put things in order. His goal was, however, that I learn to do this kind of work even without him. So we worked on strategies that I could apply on a daily basis. Like a feelings log, distinguishing thoughts from feelings, or writing down diagrams to discover automatic thoughts and so on. Learning CBT was helpful and I still benefit from it today. The way he taught it was great. Never too academic. He allowed me to jump between topics and discover CBT in my own tempo. At the same time he reminded me of the goals of it and seemed to have a clear vision, structure, and direction for me. Fighting depression is work but he is a highly motivated doctor who wants to take the challenge to work it all out with you.

More about Dr. Daniel Kimmel, MD, PhD

I am a Columbia trained and affiliated psychiatrist and neuroscientist with expertise in treating a range of mental health problems, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD, PTSD, adult ADHD, substance use, and psychosis. I work collaboratively with patients to develop a treatment approach that incorporates psychotherapy and/or medications. My specializations include psychodynamic psychotherapy with a focus on understanding and articulating your experience, as well as providing behavioral approaches. In addition, I specialize in managing multiple medications, providing a careful assessment of each medication and coordinating their interactions. My private practice allows me to dedicate thought and care to your individual needs. We start with a thorough evaluation to discuss your current problems, past treatments, and long-term goals. We then develop a plan to address your immediate difficulties and broader challenges you may face in your relationships and professional life. In addition to clinical practice, I train residents and conduct research at Columbia University on the neural basis of emotion and decision-making. I draw on my extensive neuroscience experience to consider personalized treatments informed by the most current evidence of how medicines interact with the brain, and how the brain shapes experience and behavior. I do not participate in any insurance plans, but will provide all the necessary documentation for you to submit claims for reimbursement. Visits are often covered by plans that provide out-of-network benefits. ***After you request your appointment, I will call you to confirm. Please wait for confirmation before coming to your requested appointment.***
