Getting to know Dr. Noah Smith

In my practice, you'll find a safe therapeutic space to explore your inner conflicts and a framework for discovering the answers and deeper understanding you seek. I believe strongly in minimizing medication use when possible and optimizing the many facets of life that contribute to emotional wellbeing. After earning my Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Carolina and completing my Psychiatry residency at the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital, I pursued additional psychoanalytic training at the William Alanson White Institute in Intensive Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. This training has deepened my appreciation for listening dynamically to patients rather than focusing merely on symptoms that fit a diagnosis. I am a firm believer that our therapeutic relationship is equally, if not more, important than the medication or intervention used. I also train and supervise psychiatry residents as faculty at the University of Miami. I am currently only accepting Aetna insurance. For private pay, I charge $500 for the initial evaluation, $275 for medication follow-ups, and $350 for psychotherapy sessions. I look forward to hearing from you!

What should a new client know about working with you?

Please note that if you are having recent or active suicidal thoughts, a virtual provider is probably not the right fit for you. Please seek help at your nearest emergency room or a local walk-in clinic. If you are dealing with primarily a substance abuse issue, I likely am not the right fit for you and would encourage you to seek out an addiction psychiatrist. I am not able to accept Medicare or Medicaid plans at this time.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I ask many questions not just about the symptoms you are experiencing but how these impact your functioning and overall goals in life. We will explore key relationships and significant events in your life and discover how this leads to some of the coping mechanisms you have developed (healthy or unhealthy) over time. We will explore not only medication options that may be helpful for you but also many other ways of improving your mental health (therapy, exercise, social life, mindfulness, work, diet, etc). We will collaborate together on the treatment plan with both of us coming to a shared decision on the best possible course.
