My first goal when meeting with patients is to get to know them. This helps to establish a rapport and builds trust. Second, I like to understand what brought them in to see me. Patients have busy lives and for them to take time out of their schedule to see a physician needs to be understood. Is there something I can help them with today or is it a chronic issue that needs to be worked up? As a facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, I see a wide variety of patients from patients that require closure of defects in their face after skin cancer removal to patients who want a younger and more refreshed look. I value the discussion with the patient where we come up with a plan together by providing options. By involving the patient, they are able to take ownership of their care which I find leads to the best outcomes.
