Dr. Derek Rapp is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon with fellowship training in hand and upper extremity surgery. He specializes in reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery, as well as hand surgery. Dr. Rapp is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) and is an active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Dr. Rapp has also attained the Certificate of Added Qualification in Surgery of the Hand. Dr. Rapp has extensive training in: reconstructive surgery for benign and malignant skin lesions and soft tissue tumors; breast reduction and reconstruction; gynecomastia treatment; Mohs facial reconstruction; facial trauma reconstruction; and body contouring after massive weight loss. He also has had broad training in aesthetic surgery of the face, breasts, and body. In addition, Dr. Rapp cares for a variety of clinical problems of the hand, including trauma, nerve compression, wrist injuries and fractures, and arthritis. Raised in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Dr. Rapp earned his bachelor’s degree in biology (with a minor in chemistry) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he graduated with distinction from the honors program and played rugby for three years. In 2008, he earned his medical degree from Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC. In 2015, Dr. Rapp completed his plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at Michigan State University/Grand Rapids Medical Education Partners. He then completed additional fellowship training in orthopedic hand and upper extremity surgery at the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. While a resident, Dr. Rapp participated in multiple research projects and invented an antioxidant-based wound treatment which is currently being investigated as a new treatment for full thickness wounds. This project was funded by two grants that Dr. Rapp secured.
