Getting to know Earl James Johns

I’m a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) based in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I founded Wellthy Psychiatry & Wellness to offer inclusive, holistic care for LGBTQ+ adults and allies as well as adolescents and families. My approach blends evidence-based medication management with therapeutic support (CBT, DBT), lifestyle and wellness practices, and a focus on the whole person — mind, body, and identity. I know how it feels to be misunderstood or unseen, so my goal is to create a partnership in your care: you lead the way, I listen and guide. If you’re navigating depression, anxiety, trauma, ADHD, mood disorders, or addiction — especially in the context of identity, relationships, or life transitions — you’re welcome here. Together we’ll build a treatment path that respects your experience, honors your values, and supports lasting well-being.

What should a new client know about working with you?

At Wellthy Psychiatry, clients can expect a collaborative, nonjudgmental, and individualized approach to care. We believe in building a genuine partnership with each person—listening carefully to your story, understanding your goals, and tailoring treatment to fit your unique needs and lifestyle. Our work emphasizes balance: using evidence-based medication management when appropriate, while also exploring holistic strategies such as sleep hygiene, stress management, and lifestyle changes that support overall well-being. We value open communication and take the time to educate clients about their options, so you can make informed decisions about your mental health care.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Your first session is focused on understanding you—your symptoms, history, and what you hope to achieve in treatment. We’ll complete a comprehensive evaluation and discuss diagnostic impressions, initial treatment recommendations, and next steps. Follow-up visits focus on fine-tuning your treatment plan, reviewing progress, and addressing any side effects or changes in your circumstances. Depending on your needs, visits may include medication management, brief supportive therapy, or coordination with your therapist or primary care provider. Our process is patient-centered, transparent, and flexible, with the goal of helping you achieve lasting stability and improved quality of life.

More information on payments and coverage

At Wellthy Psychiatry, we aim to make the billing and insurance process as transparent and stress-free as possible. We accept most major insurance plans and will verify your coverage prior to your first appointment. Copays, coinsurance, or deductible payments—if applicable—are collected at the time of service. For patients using out-of-network benefits, we can provide a superbill so you can request reimbursement directly from your insurance provider. For those paying out-of-pocket, we offer self-pay rates and will discuss all costs in advance, so there are no surprises. Payment can be made via credit/debit card or HSA/FSA accounts. If you’re unsure about your coverage, our administrative team is happy to help you understand your benefits and estimate potential costs before your visit.
