“I was really nervous for this appointment and worried about having to be so transparent about things I do not usually talk about. But Funmilayo was so kind and warm, she listened attentively and made conversation/opening up so easy. She also explained my options and everything we talked about throughly so I could understand what was best for me. I feel much better after meeting with her :) !”

Getting to know Funmilayo Akintunde

One of my greatest passions for working in mental health is minimizing the stigma for patients with mental health issues. Our goal is to help as many people as possible who are suffering from mental illness in silence. It is very difficult to accept that one has a mental illness, let alone ask for help. I believe I can extend my hands to those who truly need my care and attention. I am Tola, a Board Certified Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with over 10 years of experience. I earned my Master's in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing from Walden University. I have vast and diverse experience in mental health, ranging from working in drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities to inpatient and outpatient psychiatric settings. Additionally, I have worked in community behavioral and forensic health settings. I look forward to partnering with you on your journey to wellness!

What should a new client know about working with you?

Welcome to My Practice I am honored that you’ve chosen to partner with me for your mental health journey. Taking the first step toward care is often the hardest, and I am committed to providing a safe, non-judgmental space for us to work together. My Therapeutic Approach I believe that mental health is deeply connected to your physical and social well-being. My style is holistic and integrative, meaning we won't just look at symptoms; we will look at you as a whole person—including your lifestyle, nutrition, sleep, and relationships. Cancellation & Rescheduling Policy Your appointment time is reserved exclusively for you. Because this time is set aside, I request at least 24 business hours’ notice for any cancellations or rescheduling. This notice allows me the opportunity to offer that time slot to another patient who may be in need of care. Late Cancellation & No-Show Fees: Appointments cancelled with less than the required notice, or missed without any notification, may be subject to a fee. Looking forward to working with you!

What is your typical process for working with clients?

What is a psychiatric nurse practitioner? A psychiatric nurse practitioner is a registered nurse with advanced academic and clinical experience, which enables him or her to perform psychological assessments, makes diagnoses, conduct therapy, and prescribe medications for individuals with a psychiatric disorder. A psychiatric nurse practitioner is not a psychiatrist. A psychiatrist is a trained physician who has completed medical school and residency in psychiatry. If you prefer to work with a psychiatrist, or if a referral to a psychiatrist is appropriate for a complex problem, I will provide you with referral information and directly assist you with the referral process. Initial Evaluation During the initial evaluation, we will review your current symptoms, past mental- and physical-health histories, current medications, and goals for treatment. Together, we will devise a plan that may involve medication, therapy, or a combination of both. Medication Management Visits Mental health medications can significantly improve symptoms and help promote recovery. We use medications judiciously, opting for the least amount of medications necessary to help relieve symptoms. Appointments for medication management are scheduled for 15 – 30 minute sessions and are used to monitor your response. After starting a new medication or during times of dose adjustment, we will meet more frequently (every one to two weeks). Once stable or in remission, follow-up appointments will occur at a minimum of every 12 weeks.
