Born and brought up in NYC, a lifelong New Yorker except for 6 years of my medical training (in Pennsylvania and at Dunk, NC) and 2 years of military service, which most doctors did in the Viet Nam era. My professional interest is neuro-ophthlmology, the field which deals with disorders of the nervous system which have visual signs or symptoms, and the related eye diseases which can include practically everything that can go wrong with the eyes! I’m trained and Board- Certified in both Ophthalmology and Neurology. I am a senior member of the North American Neuro- Ophthalmology society and regularly attend our annual meetings.
Human Interest:
What makes me different from most ophthalmologists, aside from my more extensive training, is an attitude and practices rooted in the era in which listening to the patient and examining the patient where the mainstay of the medical practice, rather than ordering lab work and MRI’s! Many patients have told me, over the years, that I’m the only doctors who ever listens to them or explained anything to them! At the same time, we do use, in the office, current state-of-the-art technology to obtain computerized mapping of visual fields and computerized imaging of the retina an optic nerve when indicated
The inclusive domain of my subspecialty also requires me to regularly interact with my patients other doctors, which benefits everyone and helps to overcome the fragmentation of medical care that has developed in the modern era as a result of increasing specialization in medicine, one unfortunate result of which is that patients frequently have several physicians, all of whom aren’t necessarily on the same page!
