Getting to know Dr. Henrietta Okpala

I am Dr. Henrietta Okpala, a New York State licensed Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with a Doctor of Nursing Practice from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions and a Master's in Nursing from the State University of New York, Stony Brook. I have 21 years' experience in the treatment of mental disorders across the lifespan. My areas of expertise include diagnosis and treatment of psychosis, anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, impulsivity, aggression, geriatric psychiatry, and child/adolescent psychiatry. At Bridge to Care, I provide psychotropic medication management combined with psychotherapy to restore and maintain optimal health across the lifespan. Throughout my extensive career in psychiatry, I have worked with underserved communities in hospitals and outpatient community clinics within the largest healthcare establishment in the New York metropolitan area. I also serve as secretary of the board of directors for one of the largest nonprofit human services organizations in the area, providing services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Additionally, I am a member of the Nigerian Nurses Association USA, NY chapter, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to educating and raising awareness about various illnesses for preventive purposes in communities both in the USA and Africa. I bring a wealth of experience acquired through practice and have come to understand that mental health is key to physical health. To maintain the holistic function of a human being, my goal is to utilize the best available evidence-based treatment combinations to restore optimal function of both mind and body.

Practitioner was late, we waited until 1:15pm for a 12:30pm appt. She called after 2pm. She did offer a layer time but I was not available. Thank you but we will try another option.

Henrietta sounded incoherent and out of it when I called her to ask her why I never received a phone call or an emailed link prior to my appointment. 5 minutes into my appointment I had to call her directly after no contact from her end. She tried to say that even though my insurance was in-network, that I would still have to pay her X amt dollars (hundreds) cause my plan will require that I spend X amt (thousands) first before the plan "covers" anything. This is not true. I verified with my insurance company that she was in-network, and that I would only have to pay a copay, and also explained the correct way that a deductible works with all plans, which is after I reached the full deductible, there would no longer be any out of pocket cost- including any copay. The email she sent me from her "billing department" also confirmed that she was in-network and that I would only pay a copay. I would not trust this provider with anything, esp my health and well-being.

Dr. Okpala is warm, funny, and intelligent. She is easy to communicate with and does not push medication on you. She requires you to check in every week when you start with her and I appreciate that level of concern. Making appointments and dealing with insurance is always quick and easy. If you are looking for help, I would definitely recommend her.

She is really kind and listens to me. I was worried that a virtual appointment wouldn't feel the same as in person one but she makes me feel very comfortable.
