Getting to know Holly Shannon

As a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner with over 23 years of clinical experience, I am passionate about providing compassionate, evidence-based mental health care. My journey in healthcare began in maternal-newborn nursing, where I developed a deep understanding of the critical importance of mental wellness during life transitions and vulnerable periods. I recently completed my psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner certification from Purdue University, building upon my Master of Science in Nursing from Grand Canyon University. This extensive background in both physical and mental health allows me to take a holistic approach to patient care, understanding how mental health impacts overall well-being. My clinical experience spans diverse healthcare settings, from intensive care environments to outpatient services. I have served as a lactation consultant and department supervisor, roles that required strong communication skills, empathy, and the ability to support patients through challenging times. These experiences have shaped my patient-centered approach to mental health care. I hold active memberships in professional organizations, including the American Nurses Association, and look forward to bringing my comprehensive healthcare background to serve your mental health needs.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I specialize in medication management for adults living with depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and related conditions. At the core of my practice is a belief that effective treatment is built on genuine partnership. You bring irreplaceable insight into your own experience; I bring clinical expertise and evidence-based guidance. Together, those two things lead to better outcomes. Your first appointment is devoted to building a thorough understanding of your mental health history. We'll explore your current symptoms in depth — not just what you're experiencing, but how those experiences are affecting your relationships, career, and day-to-day life. I'll ask about previous treatments, what has helped and what hasn't, your medical history, current medications, and relevant family background. We'll also discuss what you're hoping to achieve, because your goals shape the direction of everything we do. When it comes to medication options, my priority is helping you genuinely understand your choices — not simply handing you a prescription. I explain how different medications work, the evidence behind my recommendations, what benefits to realistically expect and on what timeline, and which side effects to look out for. I start with medications that have a strong track record, monitor your response carefully, and adjust as we learn more about how you're responding. Throughout, I welcome your concerns and preferences without judgment. I also remain mindful of the practical side of treatment: medication costs, insurance coverage, and whether a dosing schedule is realistic for the life you actually live. Between appointments, I'm available for questions or concerns that can't wait, and I coordinate with your other providers when you're receiving broader care. Clients consistently share that they appreciate clear communication, attentive listening, and feeling like a true partner in their own care.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process begins with truly getting to know you. In our first appointment, which I schedule for a full hour, we'll have an in-depth conversation about what brings you in, how long you've been struggling, what symptoms are most disruptive to your life, and what you've tried so far. I'll ask about your psychiatric history, medical history, current medications, family history of mental illness, significant life events and stressors, and your goals for treatment. This isn't an interrogation—it's a conversation where I'm genuinely interested in understanding your experience. As we talk, I'm forming diagnostic impressions, but I don't keep these to myself. I'll explain what I'm thinking, why certain symptoms cluster into particular diagnoses, and what this means for treatment. I believe in demystifying psychiatry and ensuring you understand what's happening with your mental health. If you have questions about a diagnosis or think I'm missing something, please speak up—your insight is valuable. When discussing medication, I'm detailed and honest. I'll explain which medications target your specific symptoms and why, how they work in the brain, what benefits you might notice and when, common side effects and strategies to minimize them, rare but serious risks to be aware of, and what to do if you experience problems. I also discuss non-medication approaches that support mental health, like therapy, exercise, sleep hygiene, and stress reduction. Medication is powerful but works best as part of a comprehensive approach. In follow-up visits, we assess progress systematically. I'll ask about specific symptom changes, side effects, medication adherence, sleep quality, energy levels, mood stability, anxiety levels, and functioning in daily life. We'll adjust treatment based on your response and your feedback. These appointments are collaborative—you're an active participant in shaping your care. I'm committed to being accessible, responsive, and supportive on your journey.

Holly has been a wonderful provider and was able to pick up right where my last practitioner let off. She is thoughtful and considerate with my journey, and gives me the space to explore my thoughts and emotions and provides tactical solutions I can apply to my situation. She is wonderful and helpful and also available between sessions if I ever need anything!
I started seeing Holly through video calls for my anxiety and to ask questions about potential medication. From the very first session, she has been incredibly understanding and caring. She makes you feel truly heard and never judged. Holly takes the time to listen, answer questions, and really consider your concerns, which makes the whole process of therapy feel easier and more comfortable. I always leave our sessions feeling supported and understood. I can’t recommend her enough. She’s not only a great therapist, but also a genuinely kind person.
Holly is amazing, hands-down! She was really through and understanding my history and discussing what I need and how she can help. There was never any time in our conversation that I thought she was pushing medication on me or tell me what I need to do. It was very much a conversation between the two of us on how I feel, what I want, and what we can do together to come up with a solution. I felt extremely safe and heard. She took the extra time to answer any of my questions and reassure me that everything is and will be OK.
Very friendly, patient, and receptive. Made sure to always inform thoroughly and gave a very thorough breakdown of her thought process and methodology.
She was awesome. She was a great listener and made me feel very comfortable. She is very insightful and has given me a lot of options for treatment. I look forward to our sessions in the future. I highly recommend.
Holly was incredibly polite and friendly during our conversation. She made it clear what her protocols were but followed them in a manner that naturally flowed as a conversation. She gave me space to speak on my experiences and offered fantastic advice on my options going forward.
Holly is so kind, reassuring and on point with her analysis and suggestions. She has helped my daughter immensely in just two months -we are so grateful for her!
Holly has been wonderful to work with. She is incredibly kind, makes sure her patients are having their needs met and are feeling comfortable. Highly recommend!
Holly Shannon is genuinely one of the most helpful and supportive medical professionals I have ever seen. In our first appointment, I brought up issues I had been facing for almost two years and within a single conversation, she truly listened to me and in less than an hour had prescribed me the appropriate medications to be picked up in the same day. She truly goes above and beyond and I would recommend everyone I know to see her!
Holly was amazing and very attentive to my challenges. She gently challenges unproductive thinking and was collaborative in determining the best treatment path. So happy I found her ??
She’s very kind with calm demeanor.
Holly demonstrates that she's listening to your needs as a patient and is invested in your long-term mental health. She seems thoughtful and patient to not just prescribe medicine, but to consider how they interact and align with your goals.
Appreciate that Holly listens to everything about how I’m feeling. I do like her approach with suggesting medications and ultimately letting the patient decide the path they would like to take.
Holly’s care and wisdom was so comforting. She was collaborative and made me feel seen and heard. There is no better experience with a medical professional than what I had encountered with Holly. Amazing holistic approach to healing
Holly is so amazing. I can really tell how much she cares about me. She makes me feel like I always have someone on my team. She has a sense of humor, responds quickly to messages and validates my feelings. She has really managed to assist me with medications and I appreciate how she takes it slow to figure out what is best for me. She reminds me to be kinder to myself and give myself more credit for my everyday accomplishments. Thank you Holly!
