About Dr. James McWilliam
James R. McWilliam, M.D., is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in foot and ankle surgery. His treatment philosophy stresses conservative management and, if non-operative treatment fails, he applies an evidence-based approach to surgical correction and repair. An emphasis on minimally invasive techniques, when applicable, frequently returns his patients to an active lifestyle faster than traditional, open techniques.
As the foremost foot and ankle surgeon in Westchester County, Dr. McWilliam has pioneered cutting-edge techniques in foot and ankle surgery including ankle replacement and minimally invasive fusion, arthroscopic cartilage and ligament repair, percutaneous Achilles tendon repair, and minimally invasive bunion surgery. As such, he is an in-demand speaker on a national and international level. A lifelong educator, Dr. McWilliam continues to train medical personnel in orthopedic surgery, from medical students to experienced surgeons.
Dr. McWilliam received his medical degree from Georgetown University, and completed his internship and residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He went on to complete a Fellowship in Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Surgery at the American Sports Medicine Institute. Dr. McWilliam is also a Fellow in Deformity Correction, Limb Lengthening, and Lower Extremity Reconstruction from the Ilizarov Center in Russia.
His sports medicine experience encompasses consultancies with USA Track and Field, USA Triathlon, US Air Force Rugby, and the PGA tour. He was the team physician for the New Rochelle High School Football Team, which was named the 2003 New York State Champions. Dr. McWilliam is an Assistant Clinical Professor at New York Medical College.

I’d definitely recommend Dr. McWilliam. So many doctors now “pass off” their patients to Physician Assistants or Nurse Practitioners. Not Dr. McWilliam! He spent just the right amount of time with me talking through my condition while also engaging in friendly discussions. Only criticism is the parking situation, but it’s understandable since one of their lots is under remodel.

Dr. McWilliam is a great doctor! I had a nuanced issue with my foot, and he was patient in both understanding my concern, diagnosing the issue, and communicating his assessment back to me in a way that was clear and thorough. Fortunately, I don’t need surgery, but I really appreciate that he took the time to fully diagnose the issue.

Dr William's was caring and understanding of my toe issues. Previously to my appointment he carefully reviewed my CT scan and explained the proposed procedure with a back-up plan. What impressed me is his analysis of the CT scan with precise measurements that led to the proposed procedure. Specifically searched for a Foot and Ankle Orthopedic Specialist. Made appointment to discuss several things that need to be addressed with my feet and ankles. I was asked what was bothering me the most and that was the only thing that was addressed. When I brought up my other concerns I felt "blown off", He would not discuss anything other than 1 concern. I was told I had torn ligaments in both ankles, was given braces for both ankles and sent on my way to PT. When I asked about something for the pain (torn ligament in both ankles) I was offered an NSAID which I cannot take and then acetaminophen which does nothing. Cannot sleep because of the pain and not given anything to help relieve the pain. very unhappy

I had a great experience here, everyone was friendly and helpful. I came in very nervous about the state of my ankle after having heard a popping sound in an awkward movement. The doctor was very clear in his examination and explanation of what is most likely going on and instilled confidence in my recovery which I am grateful for. I look forward to a follow up with Dr. McWilliam after two weeks in a boot!

I was very disappointed with my visit. The exam was brief, about five minutes. Doctor did not appear interested in helping me get to the source of my pain. Did not ask if I had any questions.

Dr. McWilliams was helpful and everything he told me seemed accurate, but I did feel like he was one foot out the door the whole time and I had keep asking questions to get explanations. My issue doesn't seem that complicated so overall I felt this was a satisfactory visit.
