For more than 20 years, Dr. James L. Smith, Jr. has been a practicing spine surgeon in the Austin area. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, as well as the American Board of Spine Surgery, with advanced fellowship training in spine surgery. Since 1989, Dr. Smith has helped patients with complex spine problems. He specializes in surgery of the cervical and lumbar spine.
If you have a back or neck condition or an injury such as a herniated disc or slipped vertebrae, or you’ve been in an accident, Dr. Smith will determine the source of your pain and explain your options for treatment.

I was in a great deal of pain when I came for the visit and when I left. My goal was accomplished and I found Dr. Smith to be very compassionate. He carefully examined me and explained things to more than my satisfaction. I would recommend him in a heart beat. It's too bad the office staff doesn't quite follow suit and because the office building is actually part of a larger medical campus, directions are confusing and signage in the building, particularly the parking garage leaves a lot to be desired adding to my physical pain in navigating. I found myself not alone in this assessment.

Dr. Smith is very patient and really nice. He will make you feel at ease during the office visit. He took time to explain the finding on the CT scan, explained the diagnoses. Unlike some other orthopedics that I visited, Dr. Smith suggested that I should not be rushed to another surgery, which may create additional new problem. I would highly recommend Dr. Smith to anyone as one of the best orthopedics in town.

Dr. Smith is a great specialist. I wish we would have gone to see him the first time, but could not get into him. He's reassuring of my daughter's injury and encouraging her to continue athletics, but also cautions of what could happen if she doesn't listen to her body, etc.

It was like a reunion with a very good friend I hadn't seen in twenty years; upbeat, jovial and unhurried. I entered the office a bit slumped over, in pain, feeling quite sorry for myself. I was, however, optimistic because of the crystal clear memory of the astonishing results of a back operation Dr. Smith performed on me twenty odd years ago.
After a jovial reconnection, we got down to business and it was just like my memory; concise, to the point, with very clear options and realistic expectations. My wife and I left with with buoyed confidence and the knowledge that when the time is right we'll know that immediate help is just a phone call away. I left Dr. Smith's office with a smile on my face a bounce in my step.

The office was the most efficient I have ever been in! The front desk was ready when I arrived early to give them my paperwork that I was able to fill out ahead of time since their forms were available online. I was barely in my chair and was taken back to the room. My appointment was at 8am and the Dr was in the office no later than 8:05. Very nice bedside manner. Engaging and answered all of my questions. Explained clearly what is going on and how to resolved the issue. Very pleased and give high recommendations.

Very knowledgeable. Puts a patient at ease regardless of how difficult the nature of the treatment options discussed. Very informative and educational doctor's visit. Dr. Smith has a great sense of humor, too. He also considers all available options - starting from conservative to surgical (if applicable). Recommends conservative if knife can be avoided.
All in all, Dr. Smith is someone whom I'd love to be friends with if we met under different circumstances.
