About Dr. Joseph Sharkey

With over 40 years of experience practicing in Colorado, Dr. Sharkey is passionate about evidence-based research, particularly in understanding inflammation and its role in chronic disease and immune health. For the past decade, Dr. Sharkey has followed a whole-food, plant-based diet and an active lifestyle—swimming, biking, and playing tennis regularly. He also practices mindfulness meditation and yoga for stress reduction. These habits, along with his dedication to wellness, have helped him personally reverse several health conditions, including cancer. At 75, he feels stronger and more energetic than he did at 50. His patients have experienced similar success, improving or even reversing chronic conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease through his guidance. Dr. Sharkey empowers patients to take an active role in their health, emphasizing prevention, balance, and long-term vitality. Originally from New York City, Dr. Sharkey earned his MD from Creighton University Medical School, completed his internship in New York City, and served in the U.S. Navy, including a post in Iceland. He later practiced rural medicine in Montana before settling in Colorado. His professional affiliations include the American Medical Association, the Colorado Medical Society, and the American Academy of Family Practice. He also served for 23 years as Medical Director at the Denver Rescue Mission through the Christian Medical Association. In addition to family and integrative medicine, Dr. Sharkey is trained in sports medicine and performs office-based procedures, including biopsies, excisions, and joint or trigger point injections. Certified in BioTE hormone replacement therapy, he continues to promote holistic health. Outside of medicine, he enjoys the arts, the outdoors, and time with his wife Patricia, their four sons, two grandsons, and their bulldogs.
