Getting to know Dr. Joyce Mwaniki

I am a Doctor of Nursing Practice, having earned my degree from the University of Alabama, Huntsville, and a board-certified family psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioner with over 7 years of experience in both inpatient and outpatient psychiatric settings. I also hold a Master's in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing from the University of Texas at Arlington. I am passionate about delivering high-quality mental health primary care through evidence-based and holistic approaches. I take pride in being compassionate and a good listener who treats all patients with the dignity and respect they deserve. I strive to create a nonjudgmental and empathetic atmosphere where patients can feel safe, understood, and truly heard. I understand the need for a holistic approach to patient care and consider the interconnectedness of the body, mind, and spirit with a patient's environment, social and cultural experiences, and relationships when deciding on treatment plans.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I graduated with a Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. I am board-certified family mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. I graduated with a Master of Science in Nursing, with a specialization in psychiatric/mental health from the University of Texas in Arlington. I am trained to assess, diagnose & treat children, adolescents, and adults with mental and behavioral disorders. I am a member of Golden Key International Honor Society

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During the initial psychiatric consultation, we address chief complaints, onset of symptoms, a history of mental and physical health, treatment previously tried, and family psychiatric and social history. After this is done, the provider makes a diagnosis and discusses treatment plan. Laboratory tests may be ordered during the initial visit. A medication management follow-up is a visit to your mental health care provider after the initial consultation and treatment. During this visit, we address concerns that the patient may have, check in on treatment progress, make appropriate medication changes if needed and provide appropriate referrals. Initial psychiatric evaluations appointments are 50- 60 minutes. Medication management follow-up appointments last anywhere from 25-30 minutes.
