I like Dr. Buchanan. He and his office staff are very professional. The office was very crowded, but I was in and out in a little less than one hour (and that included x-rays). I rated him 4 stars because I haven't fully recovered from my surgery in January 2013. I thought I'd be fully healed by now with no pain. If I am pain-free by my next visit (July 2014), I'd give him 5 stars.

Matthew M. Buchanan, MD is a board certified, fellowship-trained Orthopaedic Surgeon who specializes in the foot and ankle. Dr. Buchanan joined the practice from Vail, Colorado where he was Chief of Surgery at St. Anthony’s Summit Medical Center. He is on staff at Virginia Hospital Center and Inova Fairfax, Alexandria and Fair Oaks. In addition, he works at Inova Woodburn Surgery Center and Mass Avenue Surgery Center and serves as an orthopaedic consultant to the Virginia Hospital Center Wound Healing Center.
Dr. Buchanan is an active teacher and lecturer to both Georgetown University and Combined Army and Navy Orthopaedic Residency Programs. He has authored multiple book chapters on foot and ankle topics including Pes Planus (flatfoot), Ankle Arthroscopy (minimally invasive ankle surgery) and Osteochondral Lesions of the Talus (ankle cartilage defects). His research papers have been published in leading medical journals and have analyzed the optimum technique to treat traumatic foot injuries and the effects of smoking on bone fusion.
Current clinical interests include minimizing the recovery time associated with foot and ankle surgery, bunions/hammertoes and arthritis/joint regeneration. He is one of a select group of Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeons who have received certification to perform all four Total Ankle Replacements currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
Dr. Buchanan grew up in St. Louis Missouri and received his B.S. at Duke University. He attended medical school at Ohio State University receiving dual honors in Orthopaedic and General Surgery. He received the Department of Surgery Jonasson Prize for “Exceptional Performance and Dedication to Surgery.” Dr. Buchanan served as Chief Resident at West Virginia University’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery prior to his prestigious fellowship at the Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Center in Columbus, Ohio. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.
An active sports enthusiast, Dr. Buchanan understands a patient’s desire for a quick recovery. He organized and completed a 3300-mile self-supported cross-country bicycle ride from Jacksonville, FL to San Diego, CA to support Children’s Miracle Network.

I thought Doctor Buchanan was very friendly and thoughtful. The wait time I believe was because of bad weather in the area and they were trying to make sure patience who missed their appointments because of the weather were also taken care of. That's a tough call to make but I'd rather wait and know I'm waiting so that other's wont be in pain. I live with foot pain, it's no picnic!

Dr. Buchanan seemed competent. However, I was forced to wait for an hour and a half before I got to see him. I was told twice that I was his next patient, but I actually heard him go into another patients room and introduce himself so I was lied to. I had told them I had another doctors appointment and would have to leave at a certain time. As I was leaving he came in. I could only talk to him for a few minutes because I had another doctor's appointment. It was a very frustrating experience. I could not spend any time with the doctor to really discuss my issue.
Kate Lynk the Marketing Director came in to apologize for my wait. I appreciated her time and efforts to make me feel better, but it just wasn't enough.

The appointment was short, but not rushed. He has the remarkable gift, rare in physicians, of making you feel his entire attention is focused on you and your injury. He listened with no trace of condescension, and phrased his explanations in lay terms whenever possible, explaining medical terms and procedures in more detail when necessary. Spent time w/ me explaining my issue and how it can be fixed. Did feel like only option is surgery though. But I wasn't surprised since only surgery can fix bunions and he felt mine was moderate enough not to ignore.
