Dr. Matthew Garfinkel graduated with honors (cum laude) from New York University and went on to earn his Medical Degree from the Cornell University Medical College in 1986. His General Surgery internship and Orthopaedic surgery residency were completed at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, NY. He then completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine and Surgery of the Knee and Shoulder at the Lankenau Medical Center in Philadelphia.
During and since his fellowship, Dr. Garfinkel spent many years as Team Physician for a multitude of high school and college sports teams. In 1992, he joined the Edison-Metuchen Orthopaedic Group as an Orthopaedic Surgeon, treating people with traumatic knee and shoulder injuries including patients injured in sports activities, at work, in motor vehicle accidents, and those involved in slip and fall injuries. Dr. Garfinkel specializes in surgery of the knee and shoulder, including treatment of meniscal tears and ACL tears of the knee, rotator cuff tears and impingement of the shoulder, and labral tears and instability of the shoulder.
As a board-certified Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr. Garfinkel is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Medical Association (AMA), and the New Jersey Orthopaedic Society (NJOS). He has published medical journal articles on ACL Reconstruction of the knee and has lectured on various orthopaedic treatments. For twenty-two straight years (1999-2021), Dr. Garfinkel has been listed on the Castle Connolly Guide as one of the “Best Doctors in the New York Metropolitan Area”. In June 2002, New York Magazine added him to their list of “The Best Doctors in New York” and from 2010-2021, he has been listed as a “Top Doctor” in Inside Jersey Magazine.
