Getting to know Melissa Mecka

Hi, my name is Melissa and I'm a Board Certified Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner based in New Jersey. I specialize in older adults 65+, middle-age life transitions, perimenopause and menopausal anxiety/depression, and maternal mental health, with an emphasis on individualized therapy and a holistic approach to care. When clinically indicated, I can and will prescribe medication on a case-by-case basis. We will determine the treatment plan together, keeping your personal goals as a priority. I have been a board-certified registered nurse for 29 years, a board-certified Advanced Practice Nurse since 2000, and completed my post-master's degree in Psychiatry in 2021. I earned my Post-Master's Certificate in Mental Health Nursing from Wilkes University, my Master's in Adult Health Nursing from Seton Hall University, and my Bachelor's degree from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. I'm passionate about women's issues and destigmatizing mental healthcare. Together with my colleagues at Lavender Psychiatry, I'm on a mission to create a world where feelings are felt, respected, and cared for.

What should a new client know about working with you?

PLEASE NOTE, I’M IN-NETWORK WITH AETNA, CIGNA, OSCAR, OXFORD, MEDICARE, UNITED. I DO NOT ACCEPT MEDICAID. My style is welcoming, engaging, and gentle. I value forming a close alliance with each client, and collaborating on all treatment decision-making. I work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, sexual orientations, in different life stages and career paths. Starting treatment can be a scary and intimidating process, I’ve successfully treated many people who are new to psychiatric care.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Ongoing care is always collaborative with an emphasis on your goals and priorities along with my medical guidance and expertise to assist you in those treatment decisions and lifestyle modifications. The initial session is a comprehensive, one-hour evaluation which allows me to understand your current symptoms and difficulties, and learn about important aspects of your past psychiatric, medical, social, educational, and family histories. At the end of the session, we’ll determine the best treatment course. Session frequency ranges from weekly to monthly depending on the type of treatment you’re looking for. My focus is on holistic care and therapy without the use of medication unless all other avenues have been exhausted. My practice, Lavender Psychiatry, is founded and fueled by board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioners who create therapeutic journeys that are kind, convenient and transparent so that people can flourish. We have a fantastic team that works together to ensure our clients are well taken care of. This includes our care concierge team who is available 7 days a week between your appointments, to help answer questions and assist with any issues regarding coverage and prescriptions etc. We also have covering providers in case I’m away and an urgent matter arises.
