Getting to know Dr. Michael M Zavala

Michael M. Zavala, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC, is a New Mexico-based Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner focused on holistic and integrative psychiatry. He earned his Doctor of Nursing Practice, Certificate in Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing, Master’s in Family Health Nursing, and Bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at El Paso. Dr. Zavala helps adults, high-achieving professionals, and entrepreneurs experiencing mild to moderate anxiety, depression, trauma/PTSD, and burnout/moral injury rediscover their sense of excitement and engagement with work, loved ones, and life. He offers a specialized approach for those motivated to uncover the root cause of their symptoms, improving behavioral health through lifestyle modification, psychotherapy, and integrative psychiatry—with medication as an option, not the only option. His approach harmonizes modern medicine with holistic strategies, fostering a balanced mind, body, and spirit. He is now accepting new patients via Telehealth in New Mexico.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe in a comprehensive and personalized approach to mental health care that goes beyond symptom management. Successful treatment involves fostering a strong patient/provider relationship, practicing empathy, incorporating humor, and finding positivity in every situation. This practice does not offer single-visit refills without ongoing treatment or controlled substances in any form, including but not limited to: Benzodiazepines - Alprazolam (Xanax) or Clonazepam (Klonopin) Hypnotics - Zolpidem (Ambien) or Eszopiclone (Lunesta) Narcotics - Tramadol (Ultram) or Tylenol with Codeine (Tylenol #3 or Tylenol #4) Opioids - Oxycodone (Percocet) or Hydrocodone (Vicodin) Stimulants - Amphetamine (Adderall) or Methylphenidate (Ritalin) Substance Use - Buprenorphine (Suboxone) or Methadone (Methadose)

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I believe that successful mental healthcare is the amalgamation of a strong patient/provider relationship, empathy, humor, and the ability to find positivity in any situation. My practice reflects this philosophy, offering a specialized approach for motivated individuals seeking to uncover the root cause of their symptoms. I integrate lifestyle modification, psychotherapy, and modern psychiatry with a wholistic approach, keeping medication as an option when needed. In our work together, we'll focus on lifestyle modification, incorporating elements like sleep, nutrition, and exercise. Psychotherapy, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Mindfulness/Meditation, is a central aspect of my approach. I also bring the benefits of integrative psychiatry, using modern medicine with a wholistic perspective and employing functional lab testing. Medication management, both traditional and nutraceuticals, is considered when appropriate.
