After receiving his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and history from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, where he played on the rugby team, he went on to obtain a masters degree in medical sciences at Boston University. He returned to his home state of New Jersey, attending medical school at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School where he was inducted into both the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society and the Gold Humanism Honor Society. He subsequently completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Connecticut, where he received the Cavazos Award as the “most outstanding resident, mentor and role-model.” This was followed by an orthopaedic hand and upper extremity fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Nakashian has been active in research throughout his career, which has resulted in numerous publications in orthopaedic journals and textbooks. He also has a passion for international volunteer medicine, having participated in the inaugural mission trip for The Touching Hands Project, traveling to Haiti and performing both general orthopaedic trauma surgery and surgical treatment for children with congenital malformations of the hand and wrist. Out of the office, Dr. Nakashian is a devoted husband and father. He enjoys playing guitar and various athletic pursuits, including surfing, skiing, mountain biking, hiking, soccer and rock climbing.
