About Dr. Naveen Ballem
Please Note: We do have additional telemed appointments for Weight Loss New Patient Consultation, once a month from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM.
Dr. Naveen Ballem and his family are excited to be back and established in the town where he was raised. He attended the Montclair Kimberley Academy, where he was awarded a Garden State Scholarship. He then moved to Boston for further education at Boston College. Dr. Ballem completed his General Surgery residency in New York City, and then pursued specialty training at The Cleveland Clinic in both Endocrine & Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery. He also served as a Clinical Instructor at the Cleveland Clinic’s Medical School (The Lerner School of Medicine). He continued to pursue his interests in advanced laparoscopy and academics as a fellow at The University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Center. He has extensively researched, published, and presented at conferences both at a national and international level.
Dr. Ballem is an active member of the ASMBS (American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery). He serves on the clinical consensus committee and has collaboratively published national guidelines for Bariatric Surgery. He has also built a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence for Clara Maass Medical Center (RWJ-Barnabas facility), which since inception has achieved ASMBS “Center of Excellence” status based on patient safety, staff education and patient outcomes. Dr. Ballem also serves as Director of Bariatric Surgery for Hunterdon Medical Center and Jersey City Medical Center.

Great office and very organized! Most doctors have staff that isn’t great but everyone here is on point! Everyone had a role and they made sure they did their part. Although I saw the doctor for a short time, he made me feel comfortable and didn’t make me feel rushed. All questions were answered and at the end, I felt a lot more ready to surgery.

Dr Ballem has a very comfortable bedside manner. He explained the procedure I am going to have very well and drew a picture if what my stomach will look like after the surgery. He outlined the risks and complications of the surgery clearly.
I was assigned a concierge to guide me through the process of bariatric surgery. My appointments for follow up with the nutritionist, weigh ins, and pre op appointment I was also scheduled for my surgery as well. I was given a folder with information to go through as well as a list of things I would need to get done such as medical and psych clearance. I was also set up to have a in home sleep study pre op. The only thing I wasn’t expecting was a fee for the Nutritionist as it is not covered by insurance. The psychologist they have on staff also doesn’t take insurance. I do not know if I will have to pay out of pocket after surgery. I need to follow up on that.
But it was a very good experience. I was (and still an) anxious about the whole process as it is a big lifestyle change, but I feel ready and up for the challenge.
