About Dr. Parul Shukla

Dr. Shukla serves as Regional Chief of Colon and Rectal Surgery for Westchester. He sees patients and performs surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital, Phelps Memorial Hospital, and Northern Westchester Hospital. He also serves as Professor of Surgery at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Dr. Shukla specializes in the treatment of colon and rectal cancers, including advanced polyps unsuitable for colonoscopic removal, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, diverticulitis, and complex pelvic issues. He is skilled in all established minimally invasive surgical modalities, including laparoscopic, endoscopic, and robotic techniques. Dr. Shukla earned his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from Grant Government Medical College, Mumbai. He completed his residency training at Whiteabbey Hospital, Tyrone County Hospital, and Queen Elizabeth Hospital. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Shukla is a renowned researcher and educator. He has published over 120 articles in peer-reviewed medical journals and 17 book chapters. He has served as Editor in Chief of the Journal of Colorectal Diseases and as a member of the editorial board for the World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO). Dr. Shukla is an invited reviewer for many international journals and has been an invited lecturer at hundreds of meetings and conferences worldwide. Dr. Shukla is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Glasgow and has earned many honors and awards throughout his career.

When people are dealing with internal pain, what they need most is to be heard not interrogated with a series of questions that ignore their actual responses. It felt like the doctor and the team were more focused on getting the kind of answers they wanted rather than truly listening. That created a wall of disconnection. I’m very aware of my body and how I feel. I communicate clearly and directly because I value my time and my health. But it became clear they were expecting a patient who would just comply, not one who would advocate for themselves. The doctor made me so uncomfortable that I felt the best option was to walk away. I wasn’t going to shrink myself to fit their mold. This isn’t about being defiant it’s about being human. And in healthcare, that should matter.
