Getting to know Patrick Birisi

Patrick Birisi is a Board-Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner dedicated to providing compassionate, evidence-based, and individualized mental health care. With more than 12 years of experience in behavioral health, Patrick began his career as a psychiatric nurse in inpatient settings, gaining extensive experience working with patients across the lifespan and from diverse cultural backgrounds. Patrick provides telehealth services to patients ages 12 and older. His approach is patient-centered and collaborative, recognizing that every individual has unique needs, experiences, and goals. He believes effective mental health care should address the whole person and consider the psychological, social, and environmental factors that influence well-being. His clinical interests include medication management for depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, ADHD, sleep disorders, trauma-related conditions, obsessive-compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder, schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders, and co-occurring substance use disorders. Patrick is committed to evidence-based practice while tailoring treatment to each patient's individual circumstances. His clinical perspective is also informed by psychoanalytic principles, helping patients develop insight into emotional experiences and patterns that may affect their thoughts, behaviors, and relationships. Patrick received his academic and clinical training from The College of St. Scholastica. His experience includes acute, inpatient, and outpatient psychiatric care, giving him a broad perspective on mental health treatment. Above all, Patrick strives to create a safe, respectful, and supportive environment where patients feel heard, understood, and empowered. He measures success by his patients' growth, resilience, and progress toward improved mental health and quality of life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My therapeutic approach combines evidence-based psychiatric medication management with psychotherapy and lifestyle interventions when appropriate. I believe effective treatment begins with understanding each person as an individual, and I work collaboratively with patients to develop personalized treatment plans that reflect their unique needs, goals, and circumstances. My approach draws from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), motivational interviewing, existential therapy, and holistic principles. I integrate these approaches with medication management to support meaningful and sustainable improvement in mental health. I take the time to truly understand each patient and meet them where they are in their mental health journey. My care is also informed by psychoanalytic principles, which can help explore the deeper emotional experiences and patterns that may influence thoughts, behaviors, and relationships. Above all, I strive to provide compassionate, respectful, and thoughtful care in an environment where patients feel heard, understood, and supported. Together, we can work toward greater insight, resilience, and lasting well-being.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I do diagnostic assessments that encompass both mental and physical aspects of psychiatric disorders, incorporating physical examinations, psychological evaluations, and talks regarding symptoms, medical history, and familial history while employing the DSM-5. I work with therapists who oversee medication management as they do talk therapy. A typical session includes examinations, with medication management sessions often lasting 15 to 30 minutes after an initial 60-minute evaluation. I assert that cultivating a strong rapport with clients and delivering client-centered care is essential for successful treatment. I like my patients to feel empowered and acknowledged following each session. Predicting a precise trajectory for therapy progression and symptom alleviation sometimes can be challenging since mental health therapy is not invariably a linear process. I collaborate with each patient to develop a personalized treatment plan tailored to alleviate symptoms and enhance everyday functioning. I emphasize a patient-centered approach, employing evidence-based approaches and customizing treatment regimens to meet individual requirements.
