Getting to know Dr. Paul Poulakos

----PAYMENT----- **I am an OUT-OF-NETWORK physician with most insurance companies. I will contact you via email or phone within 24 hours of your booking to answer any question, go over fees, and what to expect at your first appointment.** I am a Georgetown and Mount Sinai trained board-certified psychiatrist. In addition to seeing patients in my private practice, I am a Faculty Psychiatrist at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. I have served as a professor of psychiatry at NYU Langone Medical Center, and as an Attending Psychiatrist in various emergency rooms including NYU, Mount Sinai, and Lenox Hill. I have presented at national conferences and have worked in numerous settings with various patient populations of all ages and backgrounds. In addition to treating a broad spectrum of psychiatric disorders, I have special interests in ADHD (including treatment resistant cases), Depression, Anxiety, and LGBT Mental Health (including transgender health and gender affirmation surgery evaluations). I utilize an evidence-based, treatment approach. I do not believe in a one-size-fits-all practice of medicine. Our treatment will be collaborative, never forceful nor dismissive; my patients are very much empowered and involved in their treatment plans. Patients are responsible for payment of services at the time of booking to reserve their appointment slot. I hope to have the opportunity to meet and work together on achieving your goals.

It's a pleasure to recommend, and work, with Dr. Poulakos. I cannot say enough about his responsiveness, relatability, directness and thoughtfulness. I feel at ease and comfortable under Dr. Poulakos' care.
It's very difficult despite the number of qualified professionals to find a good psychiatrist, even in New York City. Dr Poulakos saw me about a week or so after I initially contacted him, via Zoom call. It was a simple and comfortable way to talk through my problems for the first time, and everything ran on time. He is empathetic, not overly clinical or standoff-ish and it is easy to speak with him, even though taking the first step to assessing and tackling your mental health problems can be difficult to say the least. I highly recommend a conversation with Dr Poulakos, so far the medication he has given me has been minimally invasive as far as side effects and is making positive improvement in my life.
Meeting with Dr. Poulakos was a really positive experience. I've been putting off finding a new psychiatrist given difficulties with navigating insurance, but he was great at communicating about my coverage prior to our session and making sure I was set before we met. In general, the scheduling and form process was painless and very well organized which I always appreciate, but especially now during the pandemic. The actual appointment was great. Dr. Poulakos made me feel comfortable, didn't rush the session, and really worked with me based on my past experiences to decide on an initial approach to treatment. Overall, would highly recommend Dr. Poulakos for his professionalism and consideration.
This was my first time seeking help from a psychiatrist and Dr. Poulakos made the experience worth it and helped ease my fears regarding the process. He was quick to reply to all my questions and thorough in his explanations. I feel that he is an empathetic, caring doctor and really listened to what I have to say and took the time to get to know me. I would definitely recommend him to anyone seeking psychiatry care.
Dr. Paulakos and I had a wonderfully personable and productive consultation. He was able to address an array of my issues and narrowed down the types of medication I should consider as he learned more about my experiences. I highly recommend him and I look forward to my next appointments.
I had my first initial appointment with Dr. Poulakos. Right off the bat he was extremely friendly and made sure I felt comfortable during the session. He asked insightful questions and really does care about what you go through and makes you feel understood. Highly recommend him to anyone needing the services he offers!
Dr. Poulakos was very kind, easy to talk to and professional. I hate talking about myself or my past but I found it easy to speak with Dr. Poulakos. He was not judgmental at all and was very respectful of my wishes. He also was very realistic with me and did not beat around the bush. We discussed what best treatment route met my specific needs and he was very helpful in directing me towards the best options. I absolutely will book again with Dr. Poulakos and highly recommend him, especially if you, like me, have difficulty opening up to a complete stranger.

Dr. Poulakos is an absolute gem! I needed to find a new provider after switching insurance plans and thankfully I found Dr. P on Zocdoc. He responds quickly to emails and is very flexible with appointment times in order to best fit my schedule. In addition to being kind and attentive, he takes a more holistic approach to treatment than any psychiatrist I've worked with before. It is refreshing and encouraging to be working with a psychiatrist who wants to provide his patients with comprehensive mental health care (beyond just medication management), which is exactly what I was looking for.
Dr. Poulakos is very kind and attentive to your individual needs, and he really set my mind at ease after a prior very poor experience with a prior psychiatrist. 15 minutes after scheduling, he called me for a consultation. Highly recommended.
I love working with Dr Poulakos. His kind, endearing and humorous temperament made it easy and comfortable from the beginning, with my intake not being rushed in any way, I was able to communicagte exactly what I was needing with help with in the moment. Our subsequent follow ups have been insightful. Highly recommend working with Dr Poulakos.

I really enjoy having Dr Poulakos as my psychiatrist - I feel like I am heard and not at all rushed during our sessions. During our intake Dr Poulakos encouraged me to talk through everything that was going on with my at the time, and his sincere, endearing and humorous temperament made me extremely comfortable with a first time experience seeing a psych. Our subsequent follow ups have been insightful!
Dr. Poulakos is great! He went above and beyond by calling me right after scheduling in order to get a better sense of my situation and best prepare for our appointment. He did a good job outlining the pros and cons of our therapy options, and together we formulated a plan that is best suited for me. Would recommend!
It's been pretty tough finding a psychiatrist with availabilities, given the current pandemic. Dr. Poulakos is great at updating availabilities and I jumped on the first opening that was available (same day - amazing!). Prior to the appointment, Dr. Poulakos communicated with me quickly and efficiently, and I was all set up in terms of filling out intake forms, etc. That way, during our actual appointment, there was less up-front paperwork, and more time to talk about my issues. Dr. Poulakos was early to our appointment and really listened so he could get a full understanding of what I was going through. Even after the appointment, I had a couple follow up questions and he responded quickly. Highly recommended!

Given the current COVID pandemic, it's been a little tough to find available psychiatrists. I saw Dr. Poulakos' availability pop up and jumped right on it. Communication prior to my intake appointment was quick and informational, and the appointment itself was great also. Dr. Poulakos asked a lot of probing questions to get a good idea of my situation and was very good at listening. Even after the appointment, any questions I had sent via email were responded to promptly. Highly recommend!
Dr. Poulakos was very professional and helpful in his treatment. He was courteous and on time. I would recommend Dr. Poulakos.
Frankly, I can't believe how lucky I was to be able to find Dr. Poulakos. Being an anxious person, I'm amazed at how quickly he puts me at ease. He's thoughtful, compassionate, and he really does seem like he *cares* (which may sound obvious, but it's honestly been a unique experience for me). Long story short, if you're looking for a doctor that both knows what he's doing AND will listen to you, look no further than Dr. Poulakos.
I have been working with Paul for the past few years and have found working with him to be incredibly helpful. He is thoughtful and personable and I have appreciated his willingness to work at my pace but knowing when to push me a little out of my comfort zone. As someone who has been going to therapy for most of their life I have yet to have a therapist who I have felt so comfortable with.
I'm extremely happy (and relieved) that a friend directed me to Dr. Poulakos. I was looking for a new prescribing doc after mine announced retirement, and was terrified of the sea of doctors and therapists and not knowing what I was going to get, and of the toll that search might take. But from the very start, I felt completely heard and respected by Dr. Poulakos. He is very genuinely patient-focused, and very thoughtful and nuanced in his approach. He asked good questions, believed my experience (rather than slapping something generic on the situation, at all). Likewise, I never felt rushed, and he even made a point near the end of our session to follow up on something I'd said in my initial questionnaire and hadn't gotten to, to make sure I knew it wasn't being ignored or dismissed—that kind of thoughtfulness. Additionally, even before our first session, he went above and beyond in helping me navigate filing an out-of-network claim with my insurance, and made what would have been a huge stressful (logistical and financial) headache a total breeze. I look forward to continuing to see Dr. Poulakos, and am so grateful to have found this level of care that I can trust. I would go out of my way to recommend him to my friends, and I do to you, too, internet strangers.
Dr. Poulakos is very friendly and approachable. When we first started working together, he suggested medications to try (for depression and anxiety) and we fairly quickly found the one that is right for me. I have to say that I am very happy with what has been prescribed. I had some questions about symptoms as the medication was starting to take effect and he quickly made himself available by phone to answer any questions I had and calm any fears I had. He has been great and I feel very supported.
I love working with Dr. Poulakos. He’s very attentive, knowledgeable and has helped me find the right medications to heal my chronic depression. I feel like a very different person from when I started. Keep in mind that finding the right treatment for depression can take a while, but with his expertise and care we were able to do it.
Dr. Poulakos has been my psychiatrist for several months now and I couldn't be happier. He is the first psychiatrist that I felt was actually listening to me. He addressed any and all concerns I had with my medications and always treated me with respect. Unfortunately for me, he will be moving and my insurance is not accepted. I would advise that if you are looking for a psychiatrist to go with Dr. Poulakos. I will miss him!
