I am a board-certified psychiatrist and a Professor of Psychiatry. I earned my Doctor of Medicine degree from the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center. I completed my internship at Greenwich Hospital, followed by a residency in psychiatry at Yale University and a fellowship in Psychoanalytic Medicine at Columbia University. I was educated at Princeton University, Phi Beta Kappa, magna cum laude. I developed the psychopharmacology curriculum for NY Medical College and remain on the Columbia faculty. I also supervise many residents and young doctors in psychotherapy training.

Dr. Gallagher was waiting to greet us made us feel very comfortable from the beginning.
He took his charm and asked many questions, and we did not feel rushed.
We were very happy with our experience.
He emphasized the fact that he was available if we should want to contact him and we, especially like the fact that we did not have to go through secretaries to reach him.
He is very experienced and did not rush the meeting at all.

Dr Gallagher contacted me via cell phone and asked if I had insurance. I felt like he may not of take me as he asked if I could pay him via pay pal?I was experiencing a manic episode and he said he though I may be untreatable. He abruptly hung up on my and refused to supply my normal meds.....I am an emergency medicine physician....I was looking for medication to work my night shifts during the Covid epidemic and was exhausted

Dr. Gallagher is an intelligent, thoughtful and compassionate doctor. I felt like he listened well and did a thorough job of explaining how the medications work and how I can benefit from them. I felt heard and I felt understood. I was anxious about the appointment but he has a calm, relaxing way about him that put me at ease. I would easily recommend him to others.

Dr. Gallagher was very easy to talk to and didn't take very long to zero in on the problems I was having. Although he couldn't help me with my problems, as it was outside his area of expertise, he found someone to help me while I was there! I highly recommend him!

I was so nervous about finding a doctor to help me with my ADD symptoms and had been avoiding making an appointment for several years. I finally booked one with Dr. Gallagher. No matter what I did to avoid my appointment (because I was so nervous etc.) He would not give up on me and did something incredible. He emailed me and called me until I finally showed up. His persistence changed my life!
He made me feel immediately comfortable and I was able to speak to him openly about my problems. He listened, and without judgement was able to help me understand and accept myself knowing that his treatment plan would be successful. I left feeling so hopeful and confident about my future. He is so knowledgeable in other areas as well and was able to help me with my career goals and plan my future.
Dr. Gallagher is amazing and I left knowing that I can finally move on with my life in a positive and productive way.

Will not find many psychiatrists more experienced and knowledgeable than Dr Gallagher. Rare to find a doctor with Richard's experience and with some humility who will talk to you like a person rather than just another fee paying lab specimen. First consultation with Dr Gallager went well beyond expectations, (Doc if you do not recieve check in mail please call or email me!), believe this is right doctor for my long term needs!

I accompanied my wife who needed help from Dr. Gallagher. Dr. Gallagher asked the right questions and seemed to understand my wife's problem. His expertise directly related to my wife's condition and he outlined what appears to be a good plan of action. His fee was not low but seemed reasonable and he is helping to see that we get some money back from our medical insurance.

Dr. Gallagher is extremely well qualified and knowledgeable about mental issues, prescription drugs (pharmacology) and general medicine. He was the 1st doctor that was able to treat me for my whole medical condition. He is a likeable and down to earth person who seems to sincerely care about the well being of his patients. I would highly recommend him to anyone who wants to receive proper medical care instead of many other doctors who are just pill pushers and just think about the monetary gains of the medical field. Dr. Gallagher is by far the best psychiatrist I have ever had the pleasure to meet.
