“Mr. Abel was lovely. At first, he may come across as blunt with his multiple questions, but you soon realize (and he explicitly tells you) that he is simply painting a picture of your background and drawing relevancies/parallels from the past to the present. Unlike most other psychiatrists, Dr. Abel does not rush you through your appointment but takes time to listen, or rather, more importantly, takes time to hear you—by the end of your appointment you feel just that, heard. You can tell that he is a man of his word and takes pride in his practice, and, more importantly, cares about his patients. And this was based on my first visit, I look forward to our next. ”

Getting to know Dr. Robert Abel

I am an experienced Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner who treats anxiety, depression, and a variety of other illnesses that may benefit from medication prescribed in the smallest amounts possible. I see patients virtually from the convenience of your own private location. I am happy to meet with you and discuss your concerns about your state of mind. I believe in a collaborative approach that allows you to be the one making the most informed decisions best for you. I will take the time to listen. I accept many insurance plans and can accept private pay at a reasonable rate based on your ability to pay. It is essential for you to complete the demographic, insurance, and medical history sections on Zocdoc (the patient profile) so we can use all our appointment time to talk. I can't see you unless I can review this information. Please take five minutes to do this. I earned my Doctor of Nursing Practice, Post-Master's Certificate in Family Psychiatric Nursing, and Master's in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, all from New York University. Dr. Bob Abel

Very sweet and caring individual. Very refreshing!
Poor demeanor. Proceeded to argue with me about my diet and if i understood the science behind my eating habits. Im a health major, and certified personal trainer. My eating habits have worked for years. Im good. As soon as he heard I dont want to jump into meds he immediately dismissed me and asks me how I found him even though he got my insurance info from Zoc Doc. He then tells me go back to Zoc Doc and find a psychotherapist. He did say he would immediately send me some referrals to help because the waiting list for therapists are long. He never sent the email and 2 days later I even emailed him to ask again and was ignored. No response. i cant honestly recommend him.

Extremely unprofessional, rude to the point of being harassing over email. Claimed he took my insurance and then refused to file the claim because he didn't know how to.
Efficient, kind, and easy to talk to

Truly, starting to see Dr. Abel is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’m feeling the best I’ve felt in years, my medication is finally stable, and I feel really listened to.
Verified patient
Robert Abel has been great for me. He is easy to contact. Has been there when I needed him most and I’ve noticed a great improvement in my overall health since I’ve started seeing him. Also because I travel so much for work my schedule is very complex and uncertain he has been very flexible in scheduling with me.
Verified patient
I felt confident that he was knowledgeable.

DO NOT SEE HIM. Our first appointment went seemingly fine and I was prescribed a medication I take regularly. From then on, Dr. Abel put my mental health at complete risk by failing to appear for scheduled appointments, failing to answer any of requests for a follow up, and refusing to refill my prescription. I have never been treated like this with any medical professional before.
When I first started seeing Dr. Abel for depression and anxiety, I loved him. We got on great for my first two or three appointments and he was extremely helpful and knowledgable. However, it is very difficult to get an appointment with him within the required window, which presents challenges. The couple of times I had to wait "too long" between appointments because of his schedule, he became passive aggressive during appointments and I grew to feel uncomfortable during sessions with him. He stopped offering helpful information and kept our appointments as short as possible, so I felt like I couldn't even be honest with him about how I was feeling. After nearly a year seeing him and about six months of negative interactions, he finally refused to refill my prescription prior to my appointment, so I was suddenly unceremoniously without medication, which is not the correct way to wean off of these types of drugs. So, mixed reviews overall. He's a lovely man but wasn't the right fit for my schedule, and could work on his bedside manner with patients.
This is my 4th visit with Dr. Abel. He's very straightforward and understanding. Answers all my questions, and provides a very supportive atmosphere for my treatment.

We spent most of the time talking about him. If someone is feeling fragile, I do not believe he is the right person to go to for help. If you need medication and a quick assessment, he is just fine.
Helpful thoughtful guy.
Verified patient
I had a great appointment with Robert. He was patient and insightful, referring me to services that would best address my needs. I will certainly be back to visit and truly appreciated his time.
Verified patient
Robert Abel was professional and knowledgeable about my current situation. He listened to me and cautiously prescribed the best solution for my situation. I felt so much better after my first visit.
Unfortunately, I can not recommend that anyone see Dr. Abel, especially if they are seeking medication for depression or anxiety. Dr. Abel would only agree to provide me with a one-month prescription with three refills for a very common, safe, generic anti-depressant. After my third time seeing him to renew the prescription, I was unable to schedule an appointment before my medication ran out. I have reached out to Dr. Abel several times via email and text, and he has consistently displayed very poor communication skills. On the most recent occasion, he mistakenly sent me messages intended for other patients, claimed to have no memory of our several previous conversations, refused to provide a limited continuation of my prescription, used passive aggressive language, and ultimately refused to offer any solutions to my problem. I can only advise that anyone considering Dr. Abel instead find a more responsible care provider. TL;DR: Dr. Abel requires unusually frequent appointments, does not prescribe and maintain his patient's medications responsibly, and does not communicate professionally or effectively.
Verified patient
He knew his medications and certainly gave me the time to ask questions but was inattentive and rude with follow up, including working to get prior authorization for meds
I just met Dr. Abel today with my 17 year old for an evaluation and 2nd opinion. In addition, to discuss medication treatment for my son. Dr. Abel, was on point, very honest, and knowledgeable in addressing my son’s situation. He made some recommendations. My son and I look forward to seeing Dr. Abel again, if the other resources he recommended don’t work out for my son.
Dr Abel is terrific. He's open minded, knowledgeable, easy to talk to, no nonsense, and knows how to discuss complicated issues in ways anyone can understand. My problem was not solved or even explained well by other psychiatrists. Dr Abel took a very logical and practical approach. With his help it became clear that part of my problem was actually related to SLEEP APNEA, and not just meds or stress. Make an appt and go see him. I'm an MD. I trust him. I strongly recommend him.
Great experience as always !

Dr. Abel is professional, knowledgeable and warm. He is always on time with his appointments. He is available via text and email whenever I have a question or concern. I work in the mental health field as well and am always so impressed with how much he knows and his genuine understanding of people and the problems we face. Thankful I found him on here. He’s a gem !
