Getting to know Dr. Robert Reiner

Robert H Reiner, Ph. D., BCN, BCB, Executive Director and founder of Behavioral Associates (BA),has been practicing psychology since 1981. He specializes in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for individuals, couples and families alone or in combination with Biofeedback, Neurofeedback, Virtual Reality Therapy (VRT) and QEEG assessment. Dr. Reiner is a warm, compassionate psychologist that personally meets with each new patient during the initial consultation to assess the patients’ individual needs, match them with one of the expert clinicians on staff, and devise a treatment plan. While he views medication as a last resort, psychiatrists are available to prescribe when deemed necessary. He is well known for his work in treating anxiety and phobias through biofeedback and virtual reality therapy, which has been highlighted in the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, New York Daily News, ABC, NBC, USA Today, Newsweek and Time Out magazine. He has specifically had great success in treating patients for fear of flying which was documented on an episode of The National Geographic Show featuring Dr. Reiner’s work with a phobic patient. After receiving his undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania, he went on to get his Ph. D. in clinical psychology at the University of Alabama and serves his clinical internship at Bellevue Hospital. His affiliation with the Department of Psychiatry at New York University Medical Center spans from 1980 to August 2015 and is a guest lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania psychology department. Dr. Reiner is typically available to meet with new patients on a same and/or next day basis.

Had the initial visit with Dr. Reiner who said he would assign me a therapist. This never happened despite my two follow-ups.

It was a good introduction into their care. I look forward to continuing and seeing results.

Extremely disappointed that once you talk to the psychologist he oases you along to a social worker. Totally misleading.

This was just an intake interview. I can't say yet what I think.

Great first visit. I like the approach to therapy.

This doctor told me that Neuropsychological evaluations are almost never covered by insurance and proceeded to ask me to pay out of pocket thousands of dollars. He also said it's extremely unlikely anywhere else will. I called another place and it was covered with no questions. I don't appreciate his advice and wonder about his true motivations.

Excellent
They tried to call me, once, the morning of, when I was already in the car on the way to their office. When I got there they said their internet (or something of the like) was down, and they had called to tell me my appointment was not confirmed, and they wouldnt be able to prosess my insurance info in the office in order to attend my scheduled appointment. I made my appointment on Saturday, and was never contacted prior saying there was an issue. When I got there the doctor was casually on his way out the door and was nice enough to say good morning, but not to stay and support a new patient in need. Clearly my previous time slot had not been filled by another patient. I took my services elsewhere with a same day appointment cancelation with another doctor.
Verified patient
The doctor dismissed what I was looking for and immediately started trying to sell me on serviced I did not ask for, almost sounded like a sponsored ad instead of an intake appointment.
He seems to be the main doctor, recommends one of 30 associates who can best help, but made it very clear that should there ever be any issues I am still able to contact him
The consultation with Dr. Reiner was quick and I did not feel listen to very well. I was then passed off to begin therapy with an intern which would not work for me due to their lack of experience and little possibility of a long term relationship.

This is a network of 14 doctors within one building. Dr. Reiner performs the intake duties and will match you with a therapist, but is also extremely flexible if you want to switch to another therapist.
Very professional. I plan on following through with the next steps required in my mental health care. I appreciate his time and insight

Going through a rough patch in my life of being emotionally abused. I was so happy when I met this provider on Virtual and assured me they would get me through my current family situation. Spent a few thousand dollars with insurance on tests they did and never got back to me with the results. I had needed a drs note for a family emergency misunderstood the meaning of supportive and help getting me through an abusive relationship of someone I am afraid of. Needed a drs note/letter describing my condition/tests and was told my insurance did not cover this they believe and gave me a rate of what could have been another few thousand dollars to write what I needed to help me. It seems as inc ether realized I truly do not have any money during this difficult time in my life I did not see coming they did not want anything to do with me and just disregarded me when contacting them going forward. Another office staff whom was aware and made me feel comfortable I shared with them and thought I was suppose to update prior to our call the most recent events that had occurred that week was annoyed and made me feel very uncomfortable. I am so sad this happened I really trusted this group and referred them to a few other people prior to this bc I thought they cared.

Meeting Dr Reiner felt like a sigh of relief for my whole system. He was extremely kind, listened carefully and was thoughtful about my situation in a way that led me to believe he ‘got me’. I’m looking forward to this next chapter for myself.

I felt seen and supported. I left my intake with full confidence that I would be okay following the discussion of my potential treatment plan.

The visit was over video. The connection was a little tough, but blame the internet for that. Dr. Reiner was great to talk with, very easy to chat with. He had great questions to really help set expectations, get past any assumptions I may have had, and really make me feel like I could make some progress. Can't wait to continue working together.

Video visit. It was fine.

I had an initial call with Dr. Reiner. He was really responsive and making me feel at ease about my issues. I feel confident to continue working alongside his team.

Initially I was very pleased with our interaction. As I began to really open up and felt like we were getting somewhere Dr. Reiner quickly informed me that this was just an intake session and that I would be placed with another therapist. He also then asked what insurance I had and was giddy when he realized it covered his biofeedback therapy that he then pushed on me to such an extent I couldn’t really get a word in. The session was over in 25 minutes and instead of leaving feeling better I was angry and frustrated. The only advice he offered for my anxiety (which I had only been experiencing for 2 weeks for the first time in my life, which you would think might be interesting to a professional) was that I should go to the gym and practice breathing techniques. I told him I was having a very hard time and he still ended the session and insisted I start work towards his biofeedback therapy. The person at the front desk was unable to place me with a therapist. I won’t return and I do not recommend.
Very impressed so far.
Verified patient
Came in for a serious behavioral addiction and he was adamant about pushing a new biofeedback procedure that I never heard of. I was inquiring about well researched medications that alleviated my addiction but continually shot them down in favor of his neurofeedback procedure. I don’t know enough to knock this new procedure but I feel like a doctor should present various treatment options that don’t necessarily align with his/her self interest methods.
I went to see Dr Reiner and he assigned me to a student - but I had to repeat everything I had already shared with Dr Reiner. I said I wanted someone experienced and they were not able to find me one. The office did not send insurance documents to my insurance and charged me in full and even after contacting them multiple times to no avail. Very unprofessional.

I've seen Dr. Reiner a couple times now to be placed with various therapists over the years and am now in his therapy group. He is kind and courteous, and I typically dislike seeing male therapists.
Verified patient
Initial visit was with Dr. Reiner, which was pleasant however I was passed along to another Dr. Who never contacted me to set an appropriate schedule for treatment.
Verified patient
Seemed like he was falling asleep during our first session. He pawns you off to another therapist after the first visit as "I likely [couldn't] afford [him]."
Verified patient
This practice got me over my fear of cats which I never thought would ever be possible. They treated my anxiety and helped me in a ton of ways.
Ok

Be sure to check if your insurance is accepted. I was told it was, and then was referred to a therapist (without my knowing) that was out of network. The referred therapist was great, but if your sensitive to cost, please be sure to look into what you're signing up for.
Verified patient
During the intake session, Dr. Reiner seemed to think he knew how to pigeon-hole me before I could finish a sentence, making me feel like he didn't care to listen. He pushed his personality profile test pretty strongly, and when I finally accepted the fee and got it done, I could never get an appointment to discuss the results. I know some people think he's great, and I'm sure he is for them. I just found him off-putting and lacking empathy. However, the therapist he assigned me to after the initial intake was great.

I wish I was still in NYC to continue going to Dr. Reiner. His expertise in curing the fear of flying is exactly what I went in to see him for and didn't know that was his speciality. I will be contacting the office to try and continue sessions from LA.
Verified patient
I left my appointment feeling better than I felt in quite some time. It was nice to feel like I could open up and be myself without judgment. I am hopeful and looking forward to working with Dr. Reiner and his team :)

I'm very pleased with my decision to meet with Dr. Reiner, and am looking forward to my future sessions. During our discussion, I felt like he listened without judgment, and asked questions that did not feel like they were leading me to a specific conclusion. Overall, he just put me at ease. As someone who has struggled to find the right fit therapist-wise, I'm finally hopeful that I've found someone that can help. Even just leaving the appointment, I felt as though a weight (albeit small) had been lifted off my shoulders. We'll see how future sessions go, but if you've been debating whether or not to seek professional help or are interested in seeing someone new - I recommend giving Dr. Reiner's office a shot.
Dr Reiner is supposed to meet you at the first appointment and then assign you a therapist from his staff. Unfortunately, after THREE phone calls to identify a therapist that fit my schedule, I still have never been able to see a therapist and it has been over 6 weeks since I saw Dr. Reiner. They were eager to take my money for the personality test, but not so eager to follow up with actual appointments.
He's great. He sees all the patients first and then "assigns" you to someone in the practice he thinks would be a good fit. He also leads a group session -- and I found those particularly helpful.
