“So I had Dr. Shwartz as my therapist for about 8 months. He was the best I had compared to 3+ doctors. Unfortunately when my insurance changed I had to change doctors. What set Dr. Shwartz apart was he was able to recognize that much of my BPD was rooted in anger and events from my past. I was on prescriptions I didn't like for a period of time and communicated that I wanted to not be on meds because I knew I could manage my BPD since I'd gone 33 successful years doing so. After maybe 5 months I was off the meds including the highly addictive Klonopin. ”

“I have been seeing Dr. Schwartz intermittently for over a year now, and he is a wonderful psychiatrist. He focuses on psychotherapy and continuity to really get to know you, and it's been a huge and helpful change in my life to see him regularly. His questions are thoughtful and his input is productive, and he also is a sound board for me to figure things out on my own.”

Getting to know Dr. Robert Schwartz

With more than 50 years of experience, I treat every person I see based on their individual issues. I combine insight-oriented psychotherapy with medication management when indicated. The goal is to discover the cause of the symptoms or behavior and find better ways of dealing with conflicts. Medication is used when appropriate to alleviate anxiety or depression. I D O NOT SEE PATIENTS FOR MEDICATION MANAGEMENT ONLY. My credentials include former Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at NYU Langone Medical Center, Board Certified Psychoanalyst, Training and Supervising Analyst at PANY, and Child and Adolescent Psychoanalyst. I run my private practice, Robert Schwartz M.D., in New York, NY. During consultations, I attentively listen to my patients, understand their concerns, and prepare individualized care plans. I prescribe psychiatric medications, talk therapy, lifestyle changes, and other relevant interventions. I also address caregiver queries and help them understand their role in the patient's recovery. I attended the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center, where I earned my Doctor of Medicine degree. I completed my training in Psychiatry and Internal Medicine at Kings County Hospital Center. I stay updated with the latest mental health research and advancements to provide the best possible care to my patients. If you have insurance that includes POS or PPO plans such as AETNA, EMPIRE BC/BS, CIGNA, OPTUM, or UHC, I will accept assignment from your insurance before billing you for the remainder of your cost. I strive to make treatment as affordable as possible for you.

I would not go back. Doctor did not make connection to a person 30 years old.

Great doctor, but will have you come in for weekly sessions. Couldn't afford that time, but he seemed to mean well
It was perfunctory and the Dr made a quick and not in depth diagnosis. He was not open to my concerns at all.
Not feeling comfortable, very short session about 30 mins, even didn’t talk enough the background yet.
Nice man. He listened and asked good questions that made me think. Overall a positive experience
I felt really good and hopeful when I left my appointment. I am going back to him 2x a week.
I’m really happy with finding him, I’m new but so far I feel really comfortable
Dr. Schwartz is a very attentative, caring psychiatrist. Thanks for listening!
Only had one appointment so far but it was a really good experience overall.
Professional. He made me comfortable and put me at ease right away.
For me, this was grossly overpriced and completely unhelpful.
I found him rather dismissive and impolite, unfortunately.
Initial appointment. Overall good first impression.
Great, comfortable, professional and wise physician.
Neanderthal. A very kind man. But. A Neanderthal.

He seems to believe that psychoanalysis entails the patient speaking while he says “what was that?” every 2 minutes. It’s my granddad, except he reads freud and thinks medicine is less effective than the will to power or dream analysis. Watching the therapy on the sopranos is more effective. That said, nice guy.

Absolutely spectacular doctor. Dr. Schwartz is patient and kind and actually spends time with his patient. If you're looking for a psychiatrist who simply prescribes medications, Dr. Schwartz may not be a great fit; he requries patients to spend to come in for therapy sessions (with him) on a regular basis. The only challenge I had was with the physical location. Dr. Schwartz' office is in a largely residential building and there isn't a sign or door placard for his office; I was slightly nervous while sitting in the waiting room that I was in someone else's apartment!
Great bedside manner; listened to the issues and made a great honest assessment as preliminary consultation. Dr. Schwartz focus is to use "Dynamic Therapy" which is in a sense where you talk and he uses techniques to help with underlying issues as apposed to just "managing medication usage and dosage". He prefers this to medication which I like very much. He also prefers to work solely with him and not with any other therapist/psych as it can create conflict; which also makes sense.
Terrible
I saw him for weekly therapy for a year and a half. He was caring and an excellent listener, and he provided valuable insite every time.
Absolutely wonderful doctor.
He is very insightful and not only is he on time, he is even early! He is very accommodating with scheduling. I would highly recommend him.
Just not a good fit for me. I was called and emailed regarding insurance and after it went through was still asked a lot of questions about it from who paid the bill (as though I was incapable) in the middle of our session and why is it in st Louis? There seemed to be no free schedule for me fit outsider of one time slot. He kept asking things that I'd already explained and I'm not sure he heard most of what I said due to him asking 'what' at least three times. I am NOT soft spoken by any means. I so felt a little judged a few times due to my issues the not being dire. I don't know... He has ferment reviews but my experience was just not pleasant and I left feeling like $50 was taken from me instead of feeling comfortable about our next visit together. I left feeling like I paid someone who didn't really care while I talked. Ugh... I'm sad to have to keep looking and blow through money and time but this guys just not it.
He is changing my life one week at a time. If you are looking for a doctor to prescribe you something and tell you how great you are, this guy isn't for you. If you really want to learn about yourself, get to the deeper issues and solve them, then you are incredibly lucky to be in his care. It took some time, but I can now breathe a little easier after each session and am grateful for the level of self awareness Dr. Schwartz has helped me reach. If you are willing to put in the hard work and are seeking therapy for the right reasons, I highly, highly recommend him.
very good experience. he's also very organized with communication before first visit, which makes for a punctual and valuable appointment.
Seems like a genuine caring professional.
The doctor is very professional and thorough. His office is clean and extremely private. You will feel special and not rushed. Unfortunately he did not have availability after 6pm which made it difficult for me to fit sessions in my schedule, otherwise everything would have been perfect .
