More about Dr. Ross Levin, PhD
Expert treatment for sleep problems:
I am a behavioral sleep specialist, treating sleep disorders for over 20 years. I use the most effective intervention available – Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia, recognized as the gold standard treatment by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, surpassing any medication or other types of psychotherapy. This intervention involves training in practical skills to sleep better, and individuals who learn these skills improve quickly and maintain their ability to sleep well, long after treatment is completed.
COVID-19, stress, and sleep:
The stress of living with the pandemic has created sleep problems for many, including previously good sleepers. Inadequate rest makes it harder to manage daily stress, which then results in continued poor sleep. It is important to change this cycle before sleep problems become entrenched. Whether your sleep problems have started only recently, or you have had longstanding difficulties with sleep, you should begin seeing improvement after our first few sessions.
How I help you sleep better:
In our initial 90-minute session, we talk about your sleep and the things you have already tried to sleep better. This gives me what I need to create an individualized plan to get you sleeping well soon. I will set you up with a daily plan to develop good sleep habits. You will track your progress and we will troubleshoot any difficulties in our weekly 50-minute sessions. I will be with you every step of the way – including check-ins between sessions -- to find solutions that will work for you. Many people see improvement in the first week or two, and treatment can be complete in as little as 3-5 weeks; typical length of successful treatment is 6-10 weeks. My former clients tell me they are still sleeping well months and years after our work together.
Telehealth makes it easy to get the help you need:
We will work together using video sessions, with phone sessions also available if you prefer. Recent research shows that telehealth is as effective as face-to-face treatment when using Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia. Please note that I am limited by New York State licensing restrictions to treat only NYS residents.
What are the benefits of improving your sleep?
People who get enough good sleep have better memory, attention and concentration; more daytime energy; improved cardiovascular health and lower rates of diabetes; better weight control. There are psychological benefits too, including emotion regulation, reduced anxiety and depression, better frustration tolerance and anger management, resistance to stress.
Treatment of sleep problems other than insomnia:
I am experienced in helping people who have frequent nightmares, night terrors and nighttime panic attacks, and circadian rhythm disorders.
Insurance:
I do not accept insurance directly but will provide you with bills you can file to use your out-of-network coverage. Be sure to ask your insurance provider about your coverage for video sessions which may have a different reimbursement rate than face-to-face mental health visits. Note that few providers have the extensive training required to provide Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia, which is effective quickly – so other types of psychotherapy may seem more cost-effective if the provider takes your insurance but in the end this could cost you more because treatment will likely take longer, and may not be as helpful.
What happens after you book your first appointment on Zocdoc?
I will contact you within 24 hours (except weekends and holidays) to answer your questions and give you a quick overview of how we will work together. I will ask you to complete some forms prior to our first session to make our time together more productive.
