In 2003, when minimally invasive and robotic cardiothoracic surgical techniques were in their early development, Dr. Balaram moved to New York for specialized training at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital, where she later joined the faculty as an attending surgeon. Over the past two decades, her clinical practice has centered on adult cardiac surgery, with academic interests in surgical outcomes—particularly among women—and in surgical management of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. In 2022, Dr. Balaram was appointed Clinical Chief of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, part of Weill Cornell Medicine. Beyond her clinical and academic work, she serves as Director of Operation Hearts, leading international cardiac surgical mission teams for Operation International, a United Nations–recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
