Getting to know Dr. Shelley Padgett

*** I AM NOT IN NETWORK WITH MEDICAID OR MEDICARE PLANS*** Before becoming a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I spent 14 years working as a critical care nurse. That time taught me how much courage it takes to face health challenges and how important compassion and listening are in the healing process. I went on to complete my psychiatric nurse practitioner training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and later earned my Doctor of Nursing Practice at Chatham University. With over 23 years of experience, I bring both medical expertise and a human, down-to-earth approach to my work. My style is holistic and collaborative in creating plans that feel personalized and sustainable. Above all, I aim to create the safe, nonjudgmental space you deserve where you are heard, supported, and empowered. We’ll work together to understand what’s getting in the way of your well-being and create a plan that feels doable for you. Clients often tell me they walk away with practical tools they can use right away, along with a renewed sense of hope and confidence in moving forward.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I offer medication management for addressing mental health challenges. In our sessions, I blend psychodynamic, dialectical, and psychodramatic techniques to help you connect with your true Self. I will ask you personal questions about your story, hold space for your pain, challenge you to go deeper, empower you, make you laugh, and ultimately help you understand your beautiful Self better, guiding you toward a brighter future. I believe in the power of the liminal space. Liminal means “the space between”—that transitional, sometimes uncertain space where change takes root. I, too, have stood in that in-between place, and with excellent mental health support, I learned how to embrace it as a space of growth and renewal. Now, I walk alongside my clients as they step into their own liminal spaces, helping them find hope, healing, and new life. I’ve witnessed remarkable transformations in clients—many of whom still keep in touch even after our work together ends. Their journeys affirm what I believe deeply: that healing is possible, and that mental health support can create lasting change. I look forward to meeting you and learning about your story.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The diagnostic process may take more than one session. Typically, we will meet every 1-2 weeks until your symptoms have stabilized. If we initiate a new medication, I prefer to check in after two weeks to assess effectiveness and/or side effects. After that, we will meet monthly for refills. All controlled substance refills must be sent during a session. If your symptoms are stable and you are not on a controlled substance, we can meet every 3 months for maintenance.

I've never felt as comfortable opening up to someone as easily as I did with Shelley. She knows how to provide a safe environment for her patients and knows exactly how to connect with them in a way that feels intimate. I truly recommend Shelley to anyone looking for a welcoming, positive, and understanding environment! She is a phenomenal psychiatrist!
Wonderful person to chat with and extremely helpful, fun to talk to while also taking me very seriously and helping me get the medicine and help that I need.
Shelley was the first psychiatrist who listened to me to understand without any preconceived notions. I struggle from many mental health diagnoses and it was a huge struggle to find anyone in New York City who cared and were just concerned about prescribing the status quo even if I had tried it and it hadn't worked. Shelley listened, was empathetic, and even provided me with alternative solutions and potential diagnoses based on the alignment of my symptoms. If you are looking for someone who will care about you as a person, address your needs in a way that is collaborative care-based in the sense that she will provide her highly qualified medical opinion and you'll have the final say but you take part in the process pf your own mental health care with Shelley and that is rare. She has helped me through increasingly difficult times and I owe a great deal to Shelley in terms pf how she has enabled me to whether this storm by providing great care.
Shelley is truly exceptional. I can say with complete honesty that she has been one of the most positive, life-changing influences in my journey toward balance and peace of mind. From the very first session, I felt an immediate sense of comfort and trust — she has a warmth and presence that makes it easy to open up, even about the hardest topics. What makes Shelley stand out is her rare combination of deep empathy, incredible insight, and practical guidance. Every session feels purposeful, and I always walk away feeling lighter, more grounded, and more self-aware. Shelley has helped me navigate everything from stress and burnout to self-confidence and emotional clarity. She meets you exactly where you are, without judgment, and somehow manages to bring out the best version of you every time. I am endlessly grateful for her support and highly recommend Shelley to anyone looking for a therapist who is not only skilled but genuinely cares about your well-being. She is simply amazing.

I highly recommend Dr. Padgett to anyone looking for a psychiatrist who respects lived experience and combines expertise with empathy.
Shelley made me feel truly seen and heard. What sets her apart is her incredible intuition and expertise. She was able to pinpoint my diagnosis with clarity and compassion, helping me understand myself in ways I never had before. She also guided me toward the right medication. She ensured that every step of my treatment was tailored to my needs. I always leave our sessions feeling lighter, more grounded, and empowered. She listens—not just to my words, but to the emotions behind them—and responds with insight that feels both wise and deeply personal. I’m endlessly grateful for her support, and I truly believe she has changed my life for the better. If you’re looking for a therapist who combines clinical excellence with genuine human connection, she is the one.

Shelley is kind, caring and very passionate about what he does. She made me feel comfortable from day one, Her calm, compassionate, and empathetic presence helped me navigate one of the darkest periods of my life. Her approach is refreshing to see; she always made me feel empowered and entertained every question I threw her way. I highly recommend her to help you get through a tough time in your life.
Shelley is a very knowledgeable provider and adds in a good attention to detail and addressing recurring themes as a talk therapist. As a patient of a couple years now I feel heard and seen as she gives space to discuss in a safe and judgement free environment.
Dr. Padgett changed my life after seeing many psychiatrists I found her and she was the only one that could figure out a treatment that worked for me, I’m so thankful to her and would recommend her to anyone looking for real help.
After an endless years-long search for a psychiatrist that 1) had good bedside manners, 2) actually listened and cared about me, and 3) treated me like a real human, I found Dr. Shelley. I've been seeing her for over 3 years now. I have always felt validated, heard, and well taken care of with her. She's very knowledgeable and is always willing to do whatever it takes to help me. I am thankful to have her as part of my support system, and I cannot recommend her enough.
Shelley has been, hands down, the best and most effective psychiatrist I've ever had. From her diligence to her knowledge to her empathy, she has been nothing short of a lifesaver. Shelley is someone whos craft is rooted in skill and intuition and has helped me when others couldn't. I really do owe Shelley so much and am constantly impressed by everything she does for me and will continue to embrace her services.
Shelley is a wonderful provider. She is kind, compassionate and genuine. She listens empathetically to her clients. She also spends the time with her clients to provide them with the therapeutic modalities. I am really impressed with her clinical knowledge and expertise. I would definitely refer her to family and friends.
I’ve been seeing Shelley for a while now, and she’s always been quick to meet with me when I’m destabilized, having a manic episode or just Off in some other way or suffering a depressive episode. Truly it’s been a roller coaster ride and she’s been with me through it. Even though I have a lot of complex needs and medical interactions she’s been in the weeds with me helping and tweaking medications until we finally got a combination that worked. It is a complicated combination but it works and that’s the most important part. She even helped me with ADA paperwork for work which not all practitioners are willing to do. She’s very easy to talk to in-addition to listening to my concerns and suggestions for Meds I wanted to try. I’m glad I found someone so flexible and interactive to work with.
Shelly is my guardian angel. We met at the darkest point in my life and she helped me climb out with expert clinical care as well as compassion. Her experience and wisdom regarding psychiatry is exemplary. I have seen many psychiatrists in my life time but Shelly has helped me make some very significant improvements where others put up barriers instead of helping me. If you are a person who doesn’t fit into a cookie cutter mold of care Shelly will help you figure out how to color outside the lines safely and with support.
Shelley is the only psychiatrist that has ever made me feel seen and heard, no matter what I was going through. She is always compassionate, empathetic/sympathetic, and also encouraging. I highly recommend!
