Tomas M. Grippo, M.D., is a clinician, a surgeon and a scientist in the Department of Ophthalmology at Yale School of Medicine. He is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology who serves as the interim director of the glaucoma service; associate director for clinical trials and translational research as well as the glaucoma fellowship program director at the Yale Eye Center
Dr. Grippo’s clinical interests include all aspects of glaucoma diagnosis and treatment as well as the surgical management of visually impairing cataracts.
His surgical expertise encompasses the full spectrum of glaucoma procedures including laser surgery, trabeculectomy, placement of drainage tube implants and also new minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries that are bleb-free like the trabeculectomy ab interno using the trabectome device. He also specializes in routine and complex cataract surgery including the use of premium intraocular lenses for correction of astigmatism.
Dr. Grippo completed his residency in ophthalmology at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary (NYEEI) in New York City and subsequently fellowship training in glaucoma and cataract surgery at the University of California, San Diego. Prior to residency Dr. Grippo completed research fellowships in glaucoma at the NYEEI and Molecular Medicine at the Wadsworth Center in Albany.
Dr. Grippo has authored more than 46 peered reviewed scientific papers and abstracts, has lectured both nationally and internationally and has been granted with the DAAD scholarship Grant and the ARVO Santen Grant. He currently serves as scientific reviewer for prestigious ophthalmology journals and for the Fight for Sight Foundation. Dr. Grippo is also fluent in Spanish and German.
