About Dr. Yetunde Sokunbi

After finishing her undergraduate psychology degree in the Medical Scholars Program at Rice University, Dr. Yetunde Sokunbi earned her medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. She completed her residency in the Halifax Health Family Medicine Residency Program in Daytona Beach, Fla. Dr. Sokunbi, who is board certified in family medicine, sees patients aged 18 and older. In addition to her board certification, she is a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and holds certificates in basic life support, advanced cardiovascular life support and pediatric advanced life support. She takes care of preventive health needs, provides routine physicals and screenings and treats acute issues like coughs and colds as well as chronic conditions such as diabetes and high cholesterol. Her primary clinical interests include women’s health, behavioral medicine including anxiety, depression and attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and preventive medicine, including well-woman exams, pap smears and routine screenings such as colonoscopies, mammograms and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests. She treats all her patients like family members, ensuring that they feel listened to and that she addresses their questions effectively. I was hoping to have Dr. Sokunbi as my PCP, but my recent experience left me disappointed. The medical assistant was unpleasant and dismissive, and the coordinator was unhelpful. I understand clinics can run behind—I even waited past my scheduled time without complaint because I know how that goes. However, to be denied the chance to see the physician just a few minutes later to provide clarification and updates felt wrong, especially when my actual time with the physician was no longer than 10 minutes. As both a patient and a physician, I’ve never seen a patient refused this type of reasonable request. It left a sour taste and did not make me feel heard or respected.
