What is UnitedHealthcare?

UnitedHealthcare offers a wide choice of health insurance plans for people of varying ages, lifestyles, and financial situations, catering to individuals, families, employees, and Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries across the United States.

Partnering with over 1.3 million healthcare professionals and 6,700 healthcare facilities, UnitedHealthcare provides extensive coverage and high-quality care. Their global solutions make healthcare accessible beyond borders, simplifying the healthcare experience for people worldwide.

UnitedHealthcare community plan overview

UnitedHealthcare Community Plan provides approximately 40 million Medicaid and Medicare beneficiaries affordable medical coverage. By partnering with local communities, the plan helps secure grants, raise awareness about health issues affecting women and children, and educate seniors about available health programs.

Depending on your state, UnitedHealthcare offers various low-cost or no-cost plans through its community health plan, including:

  • Medicaid only: This plan provides health insurance to children, seniors, low-income individuals, pregnant women, and people with disabilities.
  • Dual Special Needs Plans (D-SNP): Designed for individuals eligible for Medicare and Medicaid, these plans cater to those needing extra assistance due to age, disabilities, or chronic health conditions.
  • Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP): CHIP provides accessible and affordable health benefits for infants, children, and teenagers. Each state administers its own CHIP with partial Medicaid funding, resulting in varying eligibility criteria and coverage details.

What are some insurance-related terms you should know?

Navigating health insurance plans can feel overwhelming, especially if you are doing it for the first time. Familiarizing yourself with a few key insurance-related terms can help you make informed decisions about your healthcare. These include:

  • Copay or copayment: Copayment is a fixed fee for a doctor’s visit, prescription refill, or covered service. Your insurer covers the rest. Copayments are lower if you avail of services from an in-network provider than an out-of-network provider.
  • Coinsurance: This refers to the percentage of the total cost of covered healthcare services you must pay, typically after your deductible is met. Your insurer pays the rest of the amount. Similar to copayments, coinsurance is lower for services from an in-network provider.
  • Deductible: This is the total amount you must pay out of pocket for covered services before your medical insurance coverage kicks in. Typically, plans with high monthly premiums have lower deductibles and vice versa.
  • Grace period: If you miss a monthly payment, your healthcare coverage will lapse after a certain amount of time. This duration is known as a grace period. If you pay your premium before the grace period ends, your coverage will remain unaffected. If you do not, your coverage will be canceled retroactively, which means you will only be covered through the end of the last month you paid for.
  • Lifetime limit: This refers to the limit on the benefits your health insurer will pay you over your lifetime. Like your annual limit, a lifetime limit can be defined as the maximum total amount, maximum number of procedures, and maximum amount per condition. After reaching this limit, you must pay for any additional health services out of pocket.
  • Network: This includes the doctors, hospitals, and medical suppliers in a contract with an insurance provider. In-network providers offer their services to you at negotiated rates determined by your insurance plan. Typically, plans provide better coverage with lower coinsurance and copayments for in-network care.

Understanding the role of an OB-GYN and when to schedule a visit

An OB-GYN, short for obstetrician-gynecologist, is a medical professional specializing in women's reproductive health.

OB-GYNs are experts in both obstetrics and gynecology:

  • Obstetrics specializes in working with pregnant women, including childbirth.
  • Gynecology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to the female reproductive system, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and chronic pain.

OB-GYNs offer various preventive care services, such as pap smears, STI testing, pelvic exams, ultrasounds, and blood work. They also address questions related to pregnancy, sexual health, reproductive issues, and infertility.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that the first visit to an OB-GYN be between the ages of 13 and 15. This initial visit helps establish a relationship between the teenager and the doctor. Typically, if the individual has no medical issues and is not sexually active, a pelvic exam is not performed.

A first pelvic exam and pap test are recommended around age 21 or when a person first becomes sexually active. Additionally, it is advisable for women to have annual well-woman visits with their gynecologist. The specific tests conducted during these visits will vary depending on age, lifestyle, and health risk factors.

You should see an OB-GYN if you suspect you are pregnant or experience any reproductive system issues, such as:

  • Suspected pregnancy or miscarriage
  • Pregnancy complications
  • Pain during sex
  • Pain or symptoms during urination
  • STD testing
  • Suspected infertility
  • Questions about sexual or reproductive health
