Getting to know Dr. Aidan Schmitt

Dr. Aidan Schmitt is a licensed clinical psychologist who works with children, adolescents, and adults experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, behavioral challenges, and emotion regulation difficulties. She is especially skilled at helping clients who feel stuck in unhelpful patterns — whether that means persistent worry, avoidance, impulsivity, or difficulty managing strong emotions. Dr. Schmitt uses evidence-based treatments including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Her approach is active and structured, helping clients understand how their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors interact — and what to do differently. She works closely with parents when supporting children and teens, providing guidance and practical strategies that extend beyond the therapy room. (Not licensed to prescribe medication.)

What should a new client know about working with you?

Clients working with me can expect therapy to be both supportive and goal-oriented. I believe in building a strong therapeutic relationship while also focusing on measurable progress. I will help you understand how patterns in thinking and behavior may be maintaining distress, and we will develop practical tools to address them. Sessions often include skill-building, reflection, and identifying small, meaningful changes that can create momentum. For parents, I value collaboration and transparency. You can expect clear communication about goals and strategies to support your child at home.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first few sessions focus on assessment and goal-setting. I take time to understand the full picture — current concerns, developmental history, strengths, and environmental factors. Together, we clarify what success would look like and create a plan for getting there. Treatment typically involves: Identifying unhelpful thought and behavior patterns Learning emotion regulation and coping strategies Practicing skills both in and between sessions Periodically reviewing progress and adjusting goals I generally recommend weekly sessions at the beginning to establish consistency and build skills effectively. My goal is not only symptom reduction, but helping clients build long-term resilience and confidence in managing future challenges.
