My name is Bernard Kay. I am a licensed clinical social worker. In my over 40 years of practice, I’ve learned how to help my clients succeed and feel better.
My approach
My approach is client centered. My goal is to help my patients feel comfortable and to trust me and their direction in treatment. I also offer patients multi-media homework. I think that a picture is worth 1,000 words.
My focus
To relieve them of their emotional or physical pain as best I can and give them hope.
My communication style
My style is somewhat unique. I have learned to interact with patients with the goal of helping them trust me.
My journey to mental healthcare
When I was 21, I had a depression problem. I went to my college’s mental health clinic. I saw a therapist who used a psychoanalytic approach. That approach did not work for me because I needed more interaction with the therapist. When I attended graduate school for my master’s in social work, my second placement was at, Detroit Psychiatric Hospital. They taught me to listen carefully to my patients and do a robust family history. Since then, I’ve studied most of the great thinkers in my field and I have evolved to where I am now. I really enjoy helping my clients succeed.
My goals for you
I use SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time bound. If there are problems setting goals, I explore options to discover what type of therapy will provide the most benefit them.
My first session with you
To feel safe and secure and hopeful that they made a good choice in coming to therapy. I generally take a family history and a history of their symptoms, and their theories about why their symptoms occurred.
