To be seen, to be heard, to be understood. . .
These are basic needs, but too often they go neglected. Of course, the reasons for this range. It might be the stigma that mental health bears in our communities, or our own attitudes and habits of putting others' needs ahead of our own. Or maybe we think that therapy can't help because we're too far gone, too set in our ways. I understand how it feels to walk into a therapist’s office for the first time, to speak one's truth and wonder, "Am I crazy?!" As your psychotherapist, my usual answer is, “No, but you are the walking worried and with good reason….”
We are living in an era that can easily shake anyone’s sense of self, place, and purpose in the world. We are all strivers in one way or another. We all walk through life with the hopes and aspirations of ourselves, our families and communities slung over our shoulders like backpacks. My journey to becoming a psychotherapist began when I worked with teenagers and their families striving to use education as their catapult over the barriers of systemic racism and poverty.
My life experience has given me insight into the challenges that couples and families face as they parent and navigate careers and educational systems within the context of New York City’s unique set of stressors. For 15 years, I was a teacher working in NYC’s specialized high schools, and that experience informed my understanding of how our intersectional identities influence how we move through our world today.
