Hey! My name is Jovantae Holloway and I am an LCSW and a narrative therapist. I specialize in treating trauma, and co-dependency, and helping millennials navigate different life transitions, from career change to quarter/ tri-life crisis events.
My approach
If you learn about tools, you can learn how to cope or tolerate difficult feelings and situations (see CBT or other behavioral/ cognitive approaches). But by understanding your narrative, or all the beliefs and meanings you've given to yourself and the world around you, you can also learn not only how you wound up where ended up, but also how to find where you truly want to do. I implement a mix of both skill development and narrative building in my therapy approach.
My focus
I treat the last generation that has known what it's like to not have a cell phone. I find that the style of narrative therapy also works well with people who are creative or have always been inspired to be creative but never allowed themselves to be. If you even think you might have trauma, then narrative therapy could be effective in understanding why and reshaping your story moving forward.
My communication style
Clients have told me that I am calm, and straightforward, but also analytical. I encourage a curious, experimental environment where anything goes (and yes feel free to cuss in our sessions!)
My journey to therapy
After wanting to be part of the force to reduce childhood trauma and being a CBT therapist, I've become driven to pursue narrative therapy because I believe that self-help and coping skills will only get a person so far. I enjoy learning about people's stories and seeing in real-time them being inspired by the new stories they create.
