Getting to know Nicole Layer

Nicole Layer is a compassionate Mental Health Counselor provisionally licensed in New York. She is a clinician who brings warmth, empathy, and deep dedication to her clinical work, creating a supportive space where clients feel seen, heard, and genuinely cared for. Nicole holds a Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling from Hofstra University and remains committed to ongoing professional growth to best serve the evolving needs of her clients. Rooted in a person first and trauma informed philosophy, Nicole works with individuals navigating a wide range of challenges, including anxiety, depression, trauma, interpersonal difficulties, personality disorders, and LGBTQIA+ concerns. She specializes in working with clients across the LGBTQIA+ spectrum, providing affirming care that honors the complexity of identity, fosters self-acceptance, and supports individuals in navigating both internal and external challenges. Nicole is also trained in EMDR and has a particular focus on trauma treatment, drawing on this advanced training to help clients process complex experiences and reconnect with a sense of safety, self trust, and inner stability. Her therapeutic style is characterized by empathy, psychoeducation, and transparency, offering clients both support and practical tools to move forward with confidence and clarity. Clinically, Nicole integrates a range of evidence-based modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Solution-Focused therapy, and mindfulness-based interventions. She tailors her approach to each client, prioritizing their individuality and unique lived experience over diagnostic labels. Her goal is to cultivate a therapeutic environment where growth, healing, and resilience can unfold naturally as well as organically.

What should a new client know about working with you?

In the journey of life, we all face challenges that can weigh heavily on us. Sometimes these challenges, and the effort expended in overcoming them, cast a heavy darkness on our heart and mind. Whether those challenges are grappling with anxiety, navigating the depths of depression, confronting past traumas, or navigating the complexities of identity within the LGBTQIA+ spectrum - know that you are not alone. Anxiety, depression, trauma – these are not just abstract clinical terms to me. They are experiences that I've seen, heard, and helped navigate countless times before. Ultimately, though everyone’s journey is unique, what remains constant is my dedication to your well-being. Regardless of where you are in your journey, whether you're taking your first steps or you've been on this path for a while, I want you to know that there is hope, and there is a light, and together, we will find it. Together, we can explore your strengths, navigate the twists and turns of your inner landscape, and uncover paths towards healing and resilience. I believe in you, I believe in your capacity for change, and I believe in your ability to rewrite your story. You deserve to feel heard, understood, and supported without judgment. That is exactly what I will provide – a safe, compassionate space where you can be authentically you. A space where your experiences are honored, and where your voice is valued. So, if you're ready to take that brave step towards a brighter tomorrow, I'm here to help guide you along each step of the way. Let's embark on this journey together, with empathy, patience, and understanding.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach to therapy is casual, collaborative, and grounded in mutual respect. I don’t see clients as a diagnosis or a list of “issues” to "fix" I see people. I approach my work with a belief in connecting human to human, not clinician to client, and I aim to create a space where you feel safe, seen, and genuinely understood. I always meet clients where they’re at. I believe that you know yourself best - your needs, your limits, your story. I trust that, and I honor it. You’ll never be pushed to explore anything you’re not ready for. Therapy moves at your pace, not mine. That said, I’m also deeply committed to your growth. That means I’ll always be honest with you, even when it’s hard. I’ll invite you to reflect, to look deeper, and to stay curious about yourself and your patterns - because I believe you deserve to live with more ease, intention, and self-understanding. Ultimately, I want therapy to feel like a space where you can exhale and just be—without judgment, without pressure, and with the trust that you’re in charge of your own healing.
